No danger appears as Quinn kneels in the soft earth to get a closer look at the creatures. They are not creatures of arcana, but Quinn's broad knowledge serves him well. They probably died several days ago, while several died outright of combat wounds and the others seem to have been held down while they were
exsanguinated.
[sblock=Knowledge Nature:28]This, naturally, is consistent with the attacks of a vampire. Vampires were rare in your day; heroic souls and religious crusaders tended to purge "nests" whenever the opportunity arose.
As undead vampires are resistant to necrotic damage, and vulnerable to radiant damage.
Vampires often tend to appear in
caste structures, with a more powerful leader and a number of weaker creatures, usually called "vampire spawn".
A
"typical" spawn causes necrotic damage upon touch, increasing as a foe is weakened (i.e. bloodied). They are so vulnerable to radiance that even exposure to natural sunlight can destroy them very rapidly.
Interestingly, several of the wolves look like they were downed by weapon attacks.
Even Spawn would be a threat to you at your current level of abilities.
The
master castes are quite varied. At the apex are lords, who possess a veritable laundry list of abilities often including skill with weaponry (Deft Strike, Imperiling Strike) , the ability to take advantage of an opponent's weakened position to actually drink blood and replenish themselves (Blood Drain -> require combat advantage), control minds through gaze (Dominating Gaze) and transform into mist (Mist Form).
A "true" vampire lord would be an almost insurmountable challenge for your group at your current power level.
