4th Edition Rumors

My cousin told me a rumor that his best friend's uncle told him. Well, the uncle's hairdresser is the "life partner" of the guy who delivers snacks to the vending machines for WotC. When he was wheeling his cart around, he heard some guys talking about 4th edition. From what he said, the game isn't going to be played. It's going to be EXPERIENCED!
They're currently working with Nintendo on technology akin to that used in the Wii controllers. You'll have a headset like with a VirtuaBoy. The DM will create a module for Neverwinter Nights 3. You will take over your character and play through that module with a first-person view. It can be done over the entire internet. You won't even need to interact with real people!
Anyway, my cousin's bestfriend's uncle's hairdresser's "life partner" wouldn't lie to me, so I know it must be true!

A certain very well-known d20 publisher (not sure if I should say who, but it was on the mailing list ogf-d20-l in August of this year, and I think the archive is public) claimed to have heard May 2008 from a source he considered "very credible". I'm inclined to believe that. (Of course, even if it's true, it's far enough off that a lot could change between now and then.)
Several of the rumors we heard about 4E originated from people who were considered "very credible" by the ones who passed them on. One such rumor from GenCon 2005 said that 4E will be here "in a year and a half" which would mean early 2007, the time span for which we already have an official catalog. We really shouldn't believe any date that isn't signed by a WotC official. ;)

For now, all information that is actually available, it does seem like 2008 is a good contender for the release of 4E (and likely no earlier, barring huge economic shifts), but currently, all there is, is speculation based on the available data.

I doubt that will be the default way of playing, but I would be willing to bet there's a random dungeon generation mechanism along those lines presented in the DMG, for those times when no DM is available. And I don't believe that that is a bad thing, either.

They're rereleasing the 1e DMG?

/me ducks and runs away. :p

On the Internet It's Always April 1st

For D&D 4e the tiles will be done away with. Instead Wizards will sell scenary that will work with the new miniatures rules. Said rules replacing spaces etc. with movement by use of rulers and line of sight rules using fine thread. In addition attacks of opportunity will involve reflex saves with the DC set by what the subject is doing at the time. On guard and otherwise unoccupied for example, DC 5. Hard pressed in combat and sorely wounded, DC 30. In addition facing will be reintroduced and negating flanking will also require a successful reflex save.

Base character classes will be reduced to four; Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, and Wizard. Characters will have Vocations or Careers. Thus the Ranger will be a Figher Vocation with Rogue skills and some Clerical abilities. A Scholar will be a Wizard Vocation minus spells and magical abilities with Clerical skills and an emphasis on research and study.

The default setting will be designed using an updated version of the 2e World Builder's Guidebook and feature guidelines for economics, diplomacy, politics and war in D&D, with magical influence factored in. 4e monsters will be included according to where they live.

There will be a separate book on magic, including adventuring, military, daily life, and political magic among many other types.

D&D 4e will come in three volumes. A rule book for players and DMs, plus the aforementioned magic and setting books. The magic and setting books will have supplements as time goes by. But not the rule book. If the rule bok needs expansion in any manner a new edition will be produced. Naturally the rule book will be the largest tome of the three. The game will come with a special book rack much like those used for encyclopedias, with space for the three books and any supplements.

As an option D&D 4e will come as a series of PDFs, one chapter per file. POD will be offered for said files at a reasonable price.
