D&D 5E 5e CB's Stonefast OOC -- COMPLETE

OK, since I am reposting the full map, I decided to put it in a second post. Since none of us can see 140', I'm going to go ahead and put in question marks. With that said, Fulgrim knows his people and figures their lawful bent means this place is probably pretty symmetrical. Other than the misplaced door on Room 2, does this look about accurate?

I lived up on Lake Ponchartrain near U.N.O. in the early 1990s. I think Endymion (or Bacchus?) used to roll right by our home. I forget the Krewe. Fun times.
Probably Bacchus, we're a Mid-City Krewe starting at City Park. I think the only years we had to deviate were post-Katrina. Here's a shot of the corner of Orleans and Carrollton near the beginning of the parade. I take this same picture every year.

I'll make the adjustment for the door.

We are recruiting up to two new players for Stonefast, a 5e hack-and-slash dungeon crawl. Incoming characters may be either 1st or 2nd level, your choice. The party just recently earned 2nd level. The originating post in this thread contains specifics of character creation.

Fair warning: This is not a roleplay-intensive gave. Weird, I know. :heh:

Current cast includes:
Skarsgard, Colden Moor, LN Male Human Fighter 2
tuxgeo, Guran Glimnode, NG Mountain Dwarf Rogue 2
Forged Fury, Fulgrim Ironfist, LN Male Mountain Dwarf Wizard 2
Strahd_Von_Zarovich, Roscoe High-hill, CG Stout Halfling Barbarian 2
Rabbage, Meriene "Guide" Amascient, NG Female Wood Elf Cleric 1
HoJo, Eldon Tosscobble, CN Male Lightfoot Halfling Rogue 1

Do thrown weapons count as "ranged weapons" for the purposes of the Sneak Attack feature? I ask because the handaxe and light hammer are listed as "melee weapons" in the Weapons Table, but they can still be used to make ranged attacks; however, the dart is listed as a "ranged weapon" even though it has the "thrown" property.

I read the PHB as limiting sneak attack to an attack limited by three things: 1) rogue weapon proficiencies; and either 2) the "finesse" quality; or 3) the "ranged weapon" quality.

If I cross-match weapons on the Rogue weapons proficiency list with finesse and ranged weapons from the weapons chart, I deduce that these are the weapons one can use to make a Rogue sneak attack: dagger, hand crossbow, light crossbow, dart, rapier, scimitar, shortbow, shortsword, and sling.

These factors form the basis for my reading:
  • Rogue weapon proficiencies list, PHB 95, weapons permitted a Rogue: simple weapons, hand crossbow, longsword, rapier, and shortsword.
  • Sneak Attack, PHB 96: "The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon."
  • Weapons, PHB 146: "A melee weapon is used to attack a target within 5 feet of you, whereas a ranged weapon is used to attack a target at a distance."
  • Weapons table, PHB 149, these are finesse weapons: dagger, dart, rapier, scimitar, shortsword, whip.
  • Weapons table, PHB 149, these are ranged weapons: light crossbow, dart, shortbow, sling, blowgun, hand crossbow, heavy crossbow, longbow, net.

My guess is that the limitation exists to balance sneak attack, which is a fairly powerful 1st-level class ability. "You get to sneak attack, but you can only do it using these weapons."

Looks good!
Alright, now I know that; but I would bet that Guran doesn't: he probably bought his weapons before he learned that sometimes he does extra-high damage with one or two of them. When he's fighting, he'll continue to rely on his shortsword for melee (it's longer) and his handaxes and light hammers for ranged work for a while yet.
