I've got an idea for a new mini-game: everyone posts something GOOD about the option they downvoted last. No back-handed compliments, no shade, no passive-aggression. No qualifiers, either...no Ifs, no Ands, no Buts, and no mention of other editions. Just write something wholesome and nice about your last downvote. Because after all,
First: a Note
This is a Positive Only thread. You know it because of the plus-sign in the thread title. You are more than welcome to upvote and downvote any edition for any reason that you please, but keep the banter and discussion positive, light, and fun. We aren't here to dump on anyone else's good time, right? That's something that jerks do. And you aren't a jerk, right?

I'll start.

The 4th Edition rules had some of the best lore of all the other editions. I still crib large portions of the 4E lore for my home games...particularly the bits about the Shadowfell, Nerull, and the Raven Queen.

This probably would've been a better idea earlier in the thread, or at the start. But I like the sentiment behind it. Maybe next time everyone can get on board (and maybe downvotes count only half if posters can't/don't say nice things?)

Anyway, 5th Edition is actually one of the best iterations of D&D as a whole. It is true to form, paying homage to rules and mechanics that came before without compromising the game's identity. Not an easy task considering how much lore, setting, play styles, and opinions D&D has managed to shelter within its enormous sandbox.

Nothing wrong with the Rules Cyclopedia. I just never played it.

Nice, I like this game. I feel like that should be a standard practice in Survivor threads.

I downvoted AD&D 1e, solely because it had the highest score at the time I posted (actually it was tied for highest, but it seems like it’s been the highest most consistently, so that was the tie-breaker for me). I haven’t played it, so I can’t say anything good or bad about the gameplay from personal experience. But I will say that it has some really interesting stuff going on that makes me want to try it at least once. In particular, the way it’s built around troupe play instead of following the exploits of a single group of adventurers appeals to me. I also like the built-in shift in focus as higher-level characters move on from delving dungeons to start building strongholds and attracting followers. Though I suppose that’s a part of the troupe-play focus as well.

4ed: I like that the it broke away from needing the fully stat-ed up NPCs like 3/3.5/PF.

4e has probably the best encounter building rules.

Well, the "positive only" statement was in the original post, but lots of folks might skip over that stuff.

It's not a hard ask, after all.

Retro active good thing about 4E which I have been downvoting: The second wind rules were a good enough idea that I stole/adapted them as we continued with 3.xE after a 4E playtest.
