Really?

Back in the day, weren't Odin, Thor, and Frey the big three (at least in some time periods)? Frey got kicked out quite awhile ago.

Tyr is believed to have been way more important in general Germanic myth and religion than the Icelandic myths would lead one to believe (based on Greco-Roman reports of Germanic myth and cultic practice, and the history of personal and locational theonyms). That's probably who you are thinking of. In fact, a lot of scholars think that by the time the Icelandic stories (the only real textual evidence that we have) were written down, that Odin had absorbed a lot of stories originally about Tyr (Valhalla and such).

Googling around, it looks like it was Frey I was thinking of, but it might have been fairly late.

Is the general course of lots of religions for the winners to gradually take over things from the losers? Feels like that makes it hard to know what was what exactly early on unless the written records existed and were well preserved.

Yeah, most of what there is to go on are reports from the Greeks and Roman's, and names. The Icelandic myths weren't written down until everyone in Iceland had been Christian for generations, and we have very little knowledge of general Herman mythology except piecing together scattered stories from folks like Tacitus and comparing them to the myths we got latter. Tyr's name (derived from *Tiwaz) is cognate with "Zeus," "Jove," and "Deva" and means "The God."
