4d6, drop the lowest. Always rolled in front of the group.Exactly. Well, they were a little more subtle. 18, 16, 16, 15, 14, 12. Gotta have a dump stat..

If I roll low and immediately stab my character's head with my sword, would you allow me to roll again?Nah.
If you're gonna have dice, put 'em to use.
That, and not everyone is cut from the same cloth even in fantasy.
If I roll low and immediately stab my character's head with my sword, would you allow me to roll again?
[Grognard] of course not! This is D&D, where you can play anyt character your heart desires as long as random chance allows it.[/grognard]If I roll low and immediately stab my character's head with my sword, would you allow me to roll again?
Why, your fifth level fighter with an 3/2 attacks and an AC of 2 might be knight in armor, or a barbarian warrior, or a gladiator! As long as you are happy with your 3/2 attacks and AC of 2 - whatever else you imagine in your head is fine! (just don't ask me to give you something concrete on paper to actually back that up).[Grognard] of course not! You assume that the rest of the group wasn't in on the cheating.4d6, drop the lowest. Always rolled in front of the group.
Bold of you to assume my dice gave me scores good enough to be a fighter rather than a 9 strength, 14 Dex and 12 Con. Go be thief, in 10 levels your thief skills % might actually be good enough to reliably sneak or pick pockets! Why, your fifth level fighter with an 3/2 attacks and an AC of 2 might be knight in armor, or a barbarian warrior, or a gladiator! Yeah, I've been in that era. Started a new group of players and both fighters showed up with double ought STR. Legit rolled they said. You assume that the rest of the group wasn't in on the cheating.
We all saw the stat for Drizzt, Raistlin and Conan (and all the other NPCs with multiple high scores). We could understand that ability score mods started at 15, prime requisites sometimes required multiple 16s, you couldn't cast high level wizard or priest spells without an 18 caster stat AND warriors had a whole class boon (exceptional % strength) looked 2 behind a 18 strength. AD&D BEGGED you to cheat. So we all did.
And now, with 28 point buy, our scores are Lower than our average AD&D "4d6" rolls.
Those stats are good enough to be a fighter, although I'd run a thief with them personally. I assume the mental stats are nothing to write home about?Bold of you to assume my dice gave me scores good enough to be a fighter rather than a 9 strength, 14 Dex and 12 Con. I wouldn't "try" for paladin at all. Eventually, the luck of the dice will qualify you and that's when you pull the trigger on paladin.Yeah, I've been in that era. Started a new group of players and both fighters showed up with double ought STR. Legit rolled they said.
I mean, I think AD&D "begging" for high scores is why we went with 4d6, so yeah, there was some "cheating".
After watching a guy try to qualify for paladin after about 10 rolls, we decided he could just put the minimum required in the relevant stats, and play on.
Three levels later he found gauntlets of ogre power.
Good Times!
