Because I am daunted by the scale of the task. A lone designer trying to do what literally a team of dozens of people took three years to build. Even if that team's result was unsatisfying, it is not a task a lone person takes on lightly.

Fair enough I guess. I'm going to.

(For what its worth, I think you could do it.)

Well 18 is a plus 4, that is fine, but how do you get that +3 or +4 to start with?

Most players put the "+4" in the big box on the character sheet anyway and the "18" is just a reference that is never used in play, so I don't see what this changes from the current system other than eliminating what is a generally a good way to statistically determine starting abilities.
IDK, check out PF2?

I see where you are coming from, but we are kind of talking apples and orangutans here. These are valuable bits of design information that are applicable in almost any scenario in which the GM needs something on the fly. They don't have anything to do with monsters. in efect, you are advocating that the GM make up whatever the monster needs at the moment. And while there is some appeal to that, I don't think it would be universally lauded -- particularly by players, who often want some consistency in their opponents capabilities. Or, at the very least, want to be able to pull the same shenanagins.

So I understand the value, I just don't think it is as satisfying as good robust monster design with cool actions, reactions and bonus actions.
yes, it is filler when I need somethig more than the simple stat block gives me. Which is about 5% of the time. So why make something more complex when I don't use it or it is detrimental 95% of the time?

Now, as you know I like designing complex monsters a lot, like a whole lot. I just find them almost a complete waste at the table.

IMO the legend-mythic piece should either be an optional add-on or an entirely separate - but compatible - game.
I wouldn't mind if they were all add-ons - the BECMI boxed sets are still my favorite. So:

  1. Novice Box: 0-2
  2. Heroes Box: levels 3-10
  3. Legends Box: levels 11-20
  4. Mythic Box: levels 21-30
  5. Immortals Box: levels 31-60

Most of them have arrays. I don't know if any of them do random with just mods.

Ok so then this is not something I want and not something WOTC is going to do for D&D IMO.

Rolling abilities is still extremely popular, there is some debate whether or not it is the most popular way of generating abilities, but whether it is still the most popular or not, it is still very widely used by tens of thousands of players and won't be eliminated. So anything that replaces current ability scores has to come with a method of random generation.

On a more personal level I would not want it eliminated. I have played more point buy games recently but rolling abilities still is what most DMs I find online do and it is what I do in all the games I DM.

I can't recall the last time anyone in my games rolled. Interesting.
