8 power sources. so what are the other 4?

Final Attack

First Post
Power Sources:
WotC has identified 8 power sources that should take care of basically 90% of the classes they foresee making. They did not mention which ones these are aside from Arcane, Divine, Martial and Psionic.

I can't help thinking about what might be the other 4 power sources which 'cover' 90% of the classes. Anyone care to speculate with me?

1. Primal (pretty sure of this one)
This could encompass druids, sorcerers, and possibly barbarians (if not a martial class)

2. Shadow (mentioned quite a bit, but no confirmation)
This could encompass shadowdancers, necromancers, assassin?, and many others ...

3. Technology/artificing (complete guess, but nice idea)
People that specialise in tricks and traps ... possible?

4. Ki (Not a fan of the idea, but not against it either.)
It really depends how it is implemented. I'm pretty sure nobody wants the monk to turn into a Naruto ninja ... But I imagine that with some very creative writing and justification they could fill this class out.

This could include samurai, ninja, monks, and asian style warriros.

5. Illusionary (Could be a power source of its own, I wouldn't loose sleep if it was arcane though)
It wouldn't be out of the question to make this a seperate power source. Depends on whether they have enough classes to back it up. Depends on whether they want to make illusionists part of the arcane group, which makes sense.

Others I've heard but sound like they are already covered
weather, cosmic, demonic, necromatic

One more thing I'd mention is that they have mentioned 8 power sources. But I assume they need 9 to get 3 PHBs out (if trend of 3 power sources per book continues). I know I'm getting way ahead of myself, but its fun to speculate.

Somewhere, there was semi-official discourse on Ki, indicating it was NOT a seperate source to Martial. (I like this),

Shadow and Primal are, for all intents and purposes, confirmed, in R+C and W+M, as well as related products (DDM).

Psionics is highly likely.

As people in the other thread have indicated, so far ,the varying powersources correspond quite nicely to the planes, some of which has been confirmed in the W+M

Martial - Middle World
Arcane - Felwild
Shadow - Shadowfell
Divine - Astral Sea
Psionic - Far Realm (Is my guess)
Primal - Elemental Chaos

That's 6/8.. what then?

THIS is a cool awesome idea, and it really fit well together.

I'm of the opinion that the developers won't try to tie power sources directly to a single plane. For example the Primal power source has features that seem to derive from both The Elemental Chaos and The Feywild, looking at the revised DDM cards. Linking a source to a single plane would limit options, rather than expand them. A loose link, rather than a direct tie-in would seem more likely.

At this point there are basically 6 "confirmed" sources. My assumption that PHB 2 will be subtitled "primal, psionic, and shadow heroes". Though one thing I've been curious about is the "Rage" type found on the Kuo-Toa DDM cards. It's in the same location that many of the other cards have power source listed.

Technology/Artifice is likely to be a power source in my mind, because eventually WotC may want to address a steampunk fantasy campaign. Whether it will be in a PHB or a setting book for a steampunk campaign remains something to be seen.

Primal - Elemental Chaos

I have some problems with that :
1) It looks like druid are mostly shapeshifter and NOT elementalist according to WOTC (but with a lot weather related magic)
2) Warlock are arcane themed, and can draw their power from "shawow, stelar, infernal or wyld pacts".

So, I don't think there will be some absolute rule about planes and power sources.
