I couldnt find the build but I am guessing that he is taking one level of spirit shaman to use the spirit guide as his eyes?

We had a BBEG monk who was blind, though he wore a magical blindfold that granted him blindsense/blindsight (I can't remember which). I think it might have even been a WotC published magic item from somewhere (Arms & Equipment Guide maybe?).
