Having moved in closer, there appear to be about 8 of them at the dock, and another six standing in front of the depot. They have armed themselves with heavy crossbows and have scimitars belted at their sides.
 


OOC: How far away is the party from the pirates when Planus can first make out individuals? What can Planus tell about the armor they are wearing?

Assuming it is within 200 feet:
IC: As soon as he can see the pirates, Planus whispers, "Let's take them from here. I've made shots like this hundreds of times."

Then Planus can start firing & the rest of us will move up. You can lay into the crossbowmen from behind when right before they fire at us." suggests Iggy.
