A Clash of Earth and Sea (El Jefe Judging) [See Part II]

"Ooh, yeah!" says Planus quietly but excitedly. "I'll go with you."

OOC: Planus is just excited. He does have +9 Hide, but I fully expect Jack to turn him down. I won't be offended.

Charlarn of Phyrah: male human cleric 3/ranger 2

Charlarn and Planus heal the injured party members before going to bed. The cleric goes to sleep, thankful for the safe haven of the camp. In the morning, he gives thanks Phyrah for the start of a new day and prays for his spells. Zack, and Sara are readying themselves for their trip. Charlarn says to them, "I wish we were still traveling together. But each of us must choose his only destiny. May the Searcher keep you safe and I hope to see you again."

Charlarn leaves the camp with Ignatious, Planus, Opale, and Jack. The group arrives at the lake. Something catches Charlarn's eye (Spot check (1d20+3=23)). "Is that smoke over in the mountains? Phyrah has blessed us today. That might mark the entrance to the caves."

"If you figure you can make a scouting trip relatively safe, go ahead.", says Ducane, who's been silently sulking ever since the underwater battle.

"Though since our mission is to pretty much kill every living creature on, in and under this pile of rock, I'm not sure you might want to bother. Scouting will mostly be useful only if there's something we can't handle, and if there's something we can't handle around here, then we're screwed anyway, since we can't do our job.", he continues, fiddling his sword.

OOC: Sorry again. Ducane proposed this aboveground scouting slaughtering trip earlier so he's all up for it.

"Aye, but then we'll know one way or the other, won't we, Mr. Grimm?" Jack explains. "And knowing's half the battle, or so my old gaffer used to say... Better to know what you'll be landing in, before you jump, eh?"

"Never you two mind yourselves about that. It's my job, if you'll pardon my saying so, and if anyone in Orussus could do it better than I, all modesty aside, you would have hired them not me, now wouldn't you've?"

"Not this time, Chum," Jack apologizes. "Sorry... you're too loud."

"Sit tight, I'll be back in a bit," Jack advises, as he veritably vanishes into the undergrowth.

"Good eyes, there Jack." Iggy watches him leave to scout with respect. "Halflings make very good scouts. Never would have survived among the big folk w/o such skills. Perhaps we should follow, slowly. Kennedy can scout too, but does better at night. So. Have you three worked together before?" he asks Opale.

Planus pouts a little, "Fine." He is soon lost, however, in straining his ears to hear Jack, and marveling that even while standing right next to him he is unable to.

Perhaps we should follow, slowly.
"Yeah!" Planus unlimbers his bow and prepares to follow, though he defers to the others.

"I suggest not to. A large group does more noise, and Jack's stealth skills is his focus. He is sneaky. We have worked together lately. A small town was overun by a kobold tribe that was under teh order of a false dragon, a were-lizard spellcaster to be precise. We got rid of the false dragon and of the fanatic kobold. The others have stayed and they want to live in peace with the humans. It wasn't long we were back that Planus got his vision." answers Opale

While the others are debating whether to follow him and at what distance, Jack begins to quietly climb up the mountain. Most areas can be walked up without difficulty. There are a few rough spots where some climbing is called for, but Jack manages them expertly.

[sblock=Pbartender]From your character sheet:
Code:
Skills Ranks Mod Misc Total
Climb 4 +1 +2 +6

Since the mod would appear to be 0 rather than +1, the total appears to be correct.... You might want to edit this.[/sblock]

Soon the others have lost track of him completely. It takes about 15 minutes to climb up to the source of the smoke, and when jack gets there he finds that the smoke pours forth from below a large rock. He wrestles the rock aside, and finds a hole in the ground disapearing into darkness below, with smoke pouring out of it. The hole is small, only about 2 feet deep and 3 feet wide, and the smoke is somewhat thick as it rises out of it.
