a curiously overbalanced class, or the worst munchkin class ever in one of my games

Right, but Savage Species is just as "official" as minis handbook.

The only core prestige classes are those in the DMG... and the rules for playing monstrous PCs are in the same book, come to think of it...
I know, I know. But still, its just not all that common for large PCs. I'm not saying its ONLY for NPCs(obviously, its not as some people here have characters with levels in War Hulk), but that it was likely designed with NPCs in mind more than PCs. The same could be said for the much maligned Forsaker.

I like the concept behind the class, but it is the most famously overpowered prestige class of 3.5, isn't it?
No, that'd be the Radiant Servant of Pelor. Or the Hulking Hurler, if you're out to break it.

The War Hulk is not overpowered.

I think you are being generous. The forsaker is just bad game design AFAIAC.

Oh, I agree. Just pointing out that the Forsaker was probably not thought of as being for PCs, as its nearly impossible for one to work in a party. Though, if it WAS designed with PCs in mind before NPCs, I'd somehow not be surprised...

It could have been that someone out there actually had a GOOD experience with the 1e UA Barbarian. (Shrug).

(Obviously not someone who wasn't playing said barbarian in the party at the time.)

Oh, I was thinking of the Hulking Hurler. My bad.

What's the term for the opposite of min-maxing, anyway --- purposely building a sub-par character for the sake of flavor? Because that exemplar prestige class [from Complete Adventurer] is crying out for that sort of oddball character...

The classic fourfold (joke) model is munchkin/real men/roleplayer/loony. Loony could fit... ;)

[Pardon the threadjack]

Reading "Sharn: City of Towers" last night, it struck me again that that is a setting where you could do an interesting campaign with some sub-par character builds...the magewright who eventually multiclasses as an artificer, or the dwarf fighter/exemplar [sure, he can fight...but he really wants to cook!], or my Hardest Working Band in Sharn campaign idea.

In a world where few people have PC class levels, they would all still be a cut above the average Joe...and destiny can make heroes of some unlikely candidates...
