It will take a load off new DMs, since they'll only need to worry about adventuring locales rather than worrying about setting up a town that has everything he needs.

It will also help old DMs that want to throw out a quick one-shot or on-the-fly game without having to prepare a base for the characters.

I voted yes.

Even if I don't use it as a starting point, I can file the serial number off and use it when I need a random town on short notice. If the players primarily encounter the mayor on their visit to random town A, and the blacksmith at random town B, and the tavern at random town C, they'll never notice that it was the same town.

Plus new DMs should be given an example, and the that's what the DMG is for.

So if everyone wants a sample town then why aren't adventure modules profitable? I would think that it would be cool for WotC to print sample towns, castles, dungeons, ships, inns, NPCs etc. I don't want it in the DMG, and I don't want to be forced to by something that's not rules based in order to get the rules for the game.

Oh. So experienced DMs aren't supposed to buy the DMG? I guess if they put all the rules in the PHB then that would be ok.

Exactly. You have read my comment with an accuracy and a scope of insight which I find truly stunning.

Sorry you were stunned. I didn't mean read your comment with any scope. The names "Players Handbook" and "Dungeon Master's Guide" can have a connotation that doesn't describe what you're saying. Perhaps they should call the books "DnD rules" and "DnD Starter Guide" or something like that.
