A mystery race ?

I hadn't considered minotaurs at all. They would be PERFECT as a brute race (once mechanically balanced), without all that Tolkien baggage associated with orcs.

Yep, exactly, I would like to see the removal of Halflings. Half-elves, Orcs, and Half-orcs from the core – too setting specific (Middle-Earth). Just like I don't want Melniboneans in my PHB.

Dwarves, elves and gnomes all have a historical/mythological precedent, they are not the work of one man.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE Tolkien/Middle-Earth fan, I just would prefer to use things like Halflings and Orcs when running a Middle-Earth campaign.

3 Hisses for Lizardmen! Give lizardfolk the respect they deserve in 4th edition!

I know, I know. I'm a traitor to the Orc cause. But the El-modster reminded me that I've always loved playing lizardmen.

They've always been just one step removed from being playable, anway. Neutral, not evil, and almost every module or DnD video game encounter with them plays up the "misunderstood outsider" bit, where you fight the lizards for a while, discover the true source of evil somewhere else, and use a bit of diplomacy to get them to help you battle the real menace.

Loxo are where it's at man.

Them are fighting words. There's only room for one L-race in the Players Handbook, and lizardfolk are #1. Loxo's are....uhh...not as good! :p

*tries to figure out what Loxos are*

I think Drow and Changeling are the most likely candidates, from what I've heard.

I wouldn't be shocked, though, if they tossed in a draconic race of some sort (spellscale? something new?)

If this mysterious race turns out to be drow, in the PHB I we could see:

-Eladrin
-Elf
-Drow
-Half-Elf

All Medium Humanoid (Fey).

…The elf haters are going to have a field day if this is the case.

After reading all the responses, I think I would love to see a Dragonlance-style Minotaur as a standard race. Honorable, warriors, sailors. They fit the big brute archetype, but they're more than that. They're also very different from the other races that will be in the PHB.
Man, the OH MY GOD THEY ARE COPYING WARCRAFT shrieking would pretty much soar to unacceptable levels.
