I'm planning to go with Human, Kenku, Dromites and Lizardfolk as core races in the PHB. Basically, I'm going on the premise that the major species come from each animal kindom (plus insects). Sahuagin and Kuo-Toa are going to represent fish and amphibians, but I don't really see them working as PC races.

Dungeons & Dragons: Otherkin Outreach Edition.

Beastial races is an idea I've flirted with previously, but I've always wanted to create my own group of species, rather than forcing other ones into a strange, power level-spanning menagerie. Should I decide to revisit the concept in 4th Ed., I would hope the rules assist me in this endeavor.

Depends on the campaign. ;)
I know you meant that tongue in cheek (I would love to run or play an aquatic campaign) but "depends on the campaign" seems to be the response to every suggested or "I hope it's not X" race.

I think drow, are a terrible PC race and shouldn't be a core race, but as soon as I say that, I'll get "it depends on the campaign." Likewise I want my orcs to be classic evil bloodthirsty monsters, not heroes, but that "depends on the campaign..."

I can certainly accept non-standard PC races, but in "classic D&D" the PC races are supposedly the races of good. Of course WoTC has really decided to go out there with tieflings, which I oppose...not only an "evil" race, but an evil race with fiendish/outsider background.

What? No mulloscs? Echinoderms? Cnidarians? ;)

The question then is how many people are playing "Classic" D&D and how many aren't. Given that WotC is putting tieflings in the PHB, I'm willing to bet that more will enjoy the option rather than not.

Since they have Tieflings from the abyss, and Eladrin from the Feywild, wouldn't it make the most amount of sense to complete the trifecta include a race that comes from the Shadow?

I wouldn't be surprised if the upcoming race(s) fulfilled the role of coming from the Shadow, and being brutish. Probably something we haven't seen before.

Tiefling from the abyss ? I thought they were more likely to be linked with the 9 hells ?

Anyway, a brutish race from the shadow would be creepy, indeed... Tiefling as a PC race is already "borderline", but some undead related behemoth ?

Yeah. And I don't think they're "From" the 9 hells so much as they're remnants of an empire that was tainted by devils.

While I would really dig an undead race, I doubt that's how it'd be handled. The Shadowfell appears to be a wasteland where souls go to drift and then disappear. Perhaps the Shadowfell race could be physical forms that souls have wandered into/been bound to/found a way out of hte Shadowfell inside.

They've lost their identity, and found a way to actually walk out of the Shadowfell without being a ghost.

Although honestly, if I were going to drop Warforged into a regular campaign, that's how I'd do it. Animating soldiers with souls of the dead.

I would guess that somewhere eventually we will see guidelines on playing undead. Personally I would rather end up undead through game play. More interesting that way.

That's what I meant. I went looking for the planar article they did for references, but I couldn't find it.

Anyways, I like the idea of creepy PC's. Unlikely/Unforseen heroism is a fantastic basis from which to build a storyline on. Even if it's a tropism of the fantasy genre.

I hope we finally get to see the full blooded Ling... We've only been able to play halflings so far, I want to be a full Ling.
