A new weapon special ability

Damn Gravity

I am fooling around with an idea for a new weapon special ability and would like some opinions on it.

New Weapon Special Ability – Spirit Draining

The weapon with the spirit draining ability drains part of a foe’s life energy when he is struck down (reduce to below 0hps). The weapon gains one spirit change per foe struck down. This life energy is stored in the weapon and can be discharged in two ways, either as an extra +1d6 of positive energy damage per spirit charge for a single attack or as a 1d8 of healing energy per spirit charge to the wielder. The wielder can only discharge the number of charges equal to the weapon’s enhancement bonus. The foe needs it be a living creature for spirit draining to work (i.e. constructs, undead and elementals are immune to spirit draining). Against undead a charge does +2d6 of positive energy damage of per spirit charge for a single attack. The energy is not discharged if the wielder misses, only on a successful hit. The weapon can store up two times the weapon’s enhancement bonus in energy (i.e. +2 weapon can hold 4 spirit energy charges). This quality can not be applied to ranged weapons or ammunition. This is a +3 quality bonus.

Any comment would be welcomed.

Thanks Mike

actually, it looks more of a +2 enchantment to me. I think this because you have to be the one to down the foe and if your in a normal sized party the chances of this happening aren't that great.

I like the idea, but the matched powers don't make sense to me.

Draining life from living creatures helps you fight undead? Energy-draining is evil. Positive energy damage to undead is good. Healing is good. This item does both.

Also, what effect does this have on the target? When they are struck down, they can be healed. Does this draining have any lasting effects? If so, shouldn't they get a Fort save?

I agree that +2/+3 is the right ballpark.
