A question abotu DM technique

Tinker Gnome

Adventurer
Okay, well I am going back to being a player for a while. But my old/new DM/brother, wants me to make two characters. A fake character who will die, and a real character that he will not "purposely" kill. I am going to roll up both tonight I think, but when my fake character dies I am going to pretend to roll up the new one, even though he is done{except for skills). He wants to do this to show the players that their characters can die. So, is this a good idea on his part?

Doesnt sound like a good idea to me. Sounds kinda silly actually. Roll up a "fake" character so the DM can kill him/her just to show the other players that PCs can die? Weak.

If the DM wants to show the players that characters can die...then when it happens in the game for whatever reason, let the character die rather than "fudge" the rolls to save the character.

Sounds to me like maybe the DM isnt one for killing characters (which is fine...each to their own). But why then, kill a character...even a "fake" one? To show players they can die? Won't the players pick up on the fact that none of their characters die...ever....at all....as the game progresses?

He has killed characters before. So, I am still confused why he wants to do this, but it is what he wants to do.

If he does it just to show that characters can die, I don't really see the pont. But actually, it can be cool. I've done something similar a couple of years ago. The whole point of the campaign was finding out who killed the first character.
