A question about the knowledge skill

But...

...it becomes irritating when introducing certain prestige classes/feats that require certain Knowledge(x) ranks, and this is something completely new.

Especially so when the Knowledge(x) is OBVIOUSLY a subset of an already published Knowledge skill.

For instance, Knowledge (Architecture) and Knowledge (Engineering) are introduced in MaF, when there already exists a Knowledge (Architecture and Engineering).

On a side note:
Why not have a Knowledge(general) skill that provides a synergy bonus equal to 1/2 to 1/3 of the ranks in all knowledge skills?

There are some other Knowledge skills mentioned in various WotC products:
Knowledge (Illithid Lore) (from psi-hb)
Knowledge (Underdark)
Knowledge (Weaponry) (S&F???)

I can see a Knowledge (<creature_type>) skill, but in general I'd agree with trying to keep the skill categories as general and encompassing as possible.

Pertaining to monster lore, an easy way to make an knowledge list for it would be to use the ranger's preferred enemy chart, take those categories and use them as choices for Knowledge, and you would have a pretty good monster lore set of knowledges to choose from.

Ok, I know the point has been made, but I'm not sure if you realize how silly this is. Why would you need a master list of Knowledge skills? Well obviously, I'm I want my character to attedn parties, he should have etiquette. so i check the list, and i find no one thought of that so it doesn't exist sorry i guess i won't know what fork to use. Ok back to reality where if you think of a something you character would need to know, you can make a skill based on it. Simple. If you need to get ranks in a skill for a PrC, then look at the PrC prereq's. i'm having trouble thinking of a scenario in which a list would be helpful.
