But...
...it becomes irritating when introducing certain prestige classes/feats that require certain Knowledge(x) ranks, and this is something completely new.
Especially so when the Knowledge(x) is OBVIOUSLY a subset of an already published Knowledge skill.
For instance, Knowledge (Architecture) and Knowledge (Engineering) are introduced in MaF, when there already exists a Knowledge (Architecture and Engineering).
On a side note:
Why not have a Knowledge(general) skill that provides a synergy bonus equal to 1/2 to 1/3 of the ranks in all knowledge skills?
There are some other Knowledge skills mentioned in various WotC products:
Knowledge (Illithid Lore) (from psi-hb)
Knowledge (Underdark)
Knowledge (Weaponry) (S&F???)
I can see a Knowledge (<creature_type>) skill, but in general I'd agree with trying to keep the skill categories as general and encompassing as possible.
