Medium Armor Master for a DEX-based fighter. You should then invest heavily in your DEX of course [emoji6] otherwise (mechanically) it may not be an optimal fit.
I'd master one with joy though! [emoji51]

OK gang, I have yet another character building question.
In the character description for the High Elf race, the Player's Basic Rules state (on page 15) "Cantrip. You know one cantrip of your choice from the wizard spell list. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it".
I read this to say the even if you are playing High Elf as a fighter, then you would still get this ability. Is that correct?

Yes, you're reading it correctly.
I confirm as well. Although it specifies your intelligence to be the casting stat for it, meaning that you must keep separate dc/attackbonus for it if you are a caster with other stat as caster stat. Ie cleric,warlock, etc...
Just out of curiosity, what cantrip were you going to pick and why?

When reading through the High Elf race info, I stumbled across that bit about cantrips, and wanted to be sure I was reading it correctly.
I wasn't actually building a character. I finally got a printed copy of the Player's Basic Rules, and last night was the first time I have had the opportinuty to sit down with it. I decided to read the entire PDF like it's a book, in a hope to glean as much info as I can.
When reading through the High Elf race info, I stumbled across that bit about cantrips, and wanted to be sure I was reading it correctly.
I am also a new DM and I have a some questions about some issues I could not find in the rules.
1. Rogue Sneak Attack - This was thematically confusing for me. My understanding is that stealth is not required and only having advantage on an attack roll and at later levels you get it without advantage if another character is adjacent to the creature being attacked. Is this correct?
2. Creatures under the influence of a sleep spell- I could not find any rules for unconscious creatures other then the rules for being incapacitated due to being at 0 hit points. I just took away the dex mod to AC and gave the character advantage on the attack roll due to the rules of being attacked by an unseen creature. Is this correct?
3. This is just a metagame question really. My players when going through dungeons have been really turtling through in a way that has been unnerving me a little bit. I frequently get stuff like I'm searching for anything of interest. I have since made them be more specific such as traps, doors, etc. But the one that has really gotten me in a quandary is they now want to crack open doors while maintaining stealth. Last night I told them I was not allowing it anymore as you can't stealthily open a door and look through it. I am considering just telling them that they cant see anything with just a crack in the door and they will have open it to look into the room. Anyhow for now I'm not allowing it but I want to come up with a better solution and I want some ideas.
