A Simple Errand (DM:renau1g, Judge: covaithe)

"Usurpers! Stealing our knowledge? We must slay them" the wizard says with passion.

Dorn's face flashes panic. Attempting to master it, he turns toward the wizard.

"Calm yourself wizard, and explain." (Diplomacy 18)

Dorn speaks louder, addressing the humans.

"You'll have to excuse our friend here - spends a bit too much time in the apothecary, if you catch my meaning." Dorn pantomimes taking a swig from a large container to drive the point home (Bluff 29)

"You fools, we threw away any surprise element we had! This was a secret known only by a few within the order and they are not of our ilk. They must be Hekates-worshippers" Veneficus says, looking nervously at the gruff humanoids at the edge of the area.

The dwarf's crossbow is trained on the group now, himself perched the 15 foot high walls, and the large human has smacked the others around and they now stand up, hands on their weapons. The dwarf speaks "Tell ya what, why don't you take yer grandpappy and head back ta the city afore we send ya on yer way" with a toothless grin.

You notice a piece of green cloth tied to their right forearms.
[sblock=History DC 14]
That cloth denotes their allegiance to Marley, a Retired adventurer-turned-enigmatic gang lord, and former head of the Reckoners, one of Daunton's gangs that specialized in bodyguard and protection work. Nearly one-third of the taverns in Daunton employed a bouncer on Marley's payroll. A piece of green cloth tied to the right forearm was seen as a sign of allegiance to him. Missing, presumed dead at the hands of rival Hyann, at least that's what the Screamer says.[/sblock]

[sblock=Perception DC 23]
You see a pair of gnomes hiding behind a section of the ruined walls[/sblock]

Jax moves a hand to his dagger, but he doesn't draw it quite yet. He scurries behind the much larger Crag so the crossbowman doesn't have as clear a shot.

[sblock=skill checks]19 perception, Jax sees the cloth. 12 history, he doesn't know what it signifies.

I'm tempted to try diplomacy just because I want to see it fail miserably with my +1... but I'll let someone with a better bonus try first.

Oh, and R1: anything particularly shiny looking? Maybe I can steal the greataxe without its owner noticing. 21 perception.[/sblock]

[sblock=Jax]
There is a small coin purse at the camp you spot. I doubt you'll be able to steal the axe as its owner is carrying it ;) You can try though.

Also if you point out the cloth to the others, they can then see it and try the history [/sblock]

Dorn takes a step toward Ingot, glancing from face to face nervously as he tries to gauge the reactions of everyone involved.

"What," Dorn starts. "What do we do now?" he whispers.

"I think, Dorn, that they leave us no choice. Dorn, you handle that dwarf while I take on the big guy. The rest of you can back me up." Crag whispers to the group.

"Wizard...you stay out of the way and out of sight. If it looks like things are going badly, run."

Gripping his blade tighter and rolling his shield off of his shoulder and into place on his forearm, the warforged begins to make a connection with Terra, preparing for the inevitable battle ahead of them.

Jax asks Veneficus, "Oh, is that what those armbands they're wearing mean? Hekates-worship?"

(other PCs can make a DC 14 history check for the armbands)

Still taking cover behind Crag, Jax tries a last ditch effort to resort things peacefully.

"We need to get in those ruins. We've no problem with you, despite what our elderly friend says. So step aside!" He makes no particular effort to be polite about it. (12 diplomacy)

"Tell ya what ya overgrown lizard, we're just about done here with this deer and maybe we could see what kobold meat tastes like" the dwarf says, as the others draw weapons.

I'll post combat either tonight or tomorrow. [/sblock]

I'm working on the update now. In the meantime feel free to look at the Perception DC 17 sblock in my post #702 now that Jax's pointed it out. [/sblock]
