A Simple Errand (DM:renau1g, Judge: covaithe)

"Uh...what? Dragon summoning staff? Destroying it? My stars and garters, how could you even joke about that. You could give an old man a heart attack" he replies.

"Unfortunately, sir, it is no joke. I have had several visions, given to me by my totem nature spirit of earth. I call her Terra. Terra has sent me visions of a man named Ezren wielding this staff," Crag continues, pulling the wooden staff out of his pack to show to the Master, "and summoning great beasts and demons with it. When we recovered this staff, it was spewing out earth elementals and was attempting to open a portal large enough for a dragon to escape into our realm. From the looks of the claws that were trying to force the portal open, it would have been a red dragon of significant power. The end of these visions always ends in the destruction of Daunton. I cannot allow this to happen. Other visions have led us here, to your home. For what reasons Terra has not shown me, but I believe we are here so that you can either nullify the staff completely, or destroy it in its entirety. Is this something that you can help us to accomplish? I do not know anything about magical enchantment or disenchantment, but if there were anything of value that was created in the process of destroying this staff, you would be more than welcome to it in exchange."

"May I examine it?" the wizard asks, presuming yes, he holds it in front of himself for a moment and considers it. After five long minutes of silence, the man hands the staff back to Crag.

"This is certainly a powerful item, where have you recovered it from? Maybe you can relate the details of your efforts as more information will certainly aid me in my analysis of the best course of action for this implement" he continues

Crag nods, thankful that the Master is willing to at least consider his plight. Going through everything he can remember, he starts relaying everything back from when Ezren hired them, to showing up on his front steps, allowing his comrades to input anything he may have missed.

"Ever since we recovered the staff, I get an evil feeling when I'm near Ezren. He will kill everyone we know if he gets a hold of this staff. This is why we must destroy it at all costs."

Ingot stands while Crag tells the tale, interrupting only when he gets to the part where a creature was trying to emerge from the staff. "Crag, are you sure it was a dragon?" it asks. "It might have been, but I didn't get a good enough look at it to tell for sure. Honestly, I wonder if the true danger of the staff is that it might bury the city completely in mud."

At the end of the story, Ingot adds a question for the Master. "Do you know of this Ezren?"

"Hmmmm....Ezren, Ezren.... hmmm, no I cannot recall anyone with that name, perhaps if I do know him it could be an alias." the wizard says, and suddenly the staff strains and stretches a bit, a tiny crack appearing on its shaft. Tiny drips of roiling mud begin dropping to the carpeted floor. "Oh mather, let me get that meth." Igor says, running forward and pulling out a rag to catch the mess.

"Hmmm...most intriguing, it appears whatever you did to keep the portal closed seems to be wearing off. Even powerful arcane wards lose their potency after a time so this is not entirely unexpected, especially without a true arcanist amongst you. This dragon could have been a representation in your visions of the elemental chaos that this staff has a tie to and the destructive nature of this staff. I can now see that despite the potential knowledge and power this staff can provide, it would appear to be too dangerous to remain. It is too potent to attempt a normal disenchantment ritual as there are no safeguards built in and if I did complete that, it could tear a hole into the Elemental planes that would engulf Daunton. That would certainly not do. I know of an old ruin in the wilds of the interior of Daunton that may meet our needs. It is an old temple to Hekates, long into ruin, but I have been meaning to investigate it myself. Perhaps I can accompany you on the journey and we can work on the ritual to destroy the staff together?" the wizard says.

Jax grows increasingly alarmed as the wizard speaks. First: the staff is not actually sealed. Second: the staff could explode and take Daunton with it - and Jax's treasure hoard by extension. Finally, the super-wizard of the tower can't do anything about it!

He is almost panicked when he speaks. "We have to get rid of it! Let's toss it in the deep sea or something. It's probably safer than walking through the wilds again. There'd be more dragons there, no doubt!"

Dorn's face also flashes panic with the revelation of the staff's unstable nature.

Perhaps I can accompany you on the journey and we can work on the ritual to destroy the staff together?

Dorn is visibly relieved at these words. He turns to his companions and speaks in a low voice.

"Friends, I think we should accept this offer of help. The level of arcanery imbued in the staff is far beyond my ability to comprehend, let alone control. What do you say?"

"Dragons? Like real dragons? Not kobolds...uhm...maybe it's not a great idea I come with you. No, maybe one of you could do it...no...that would not do, it would take years for the necessary ritual to be explained. " the mage says, the thought of his personal safety at risk blanches his face.

Just FWIW he's not a wizard as in the PC class, he's a guy who knows how to use rituals so don't be counting on him tossing fireballs, or even magic missiles ;) [/sblock]

"There is no need for panic. If you come with us, you can count on us to protect you from the wilds. Terra and I will protect you with our very existence. The staff must be destroyed, and if you are the only one here who can do so in the short amount of time we have to do so, then you need to be the one to accompany us," Crag says matter-of-factly.
