A Sojourn in Sairundan [Judge: Manzanita]

OOC: It was returned to J-mumble's father, except for 100 gp which was gifted to Lasair, which I don't remember her telling the rest of us about. She gave away a few coins to the 4 Riverfolk who left. No, no - bookkeeping - the only English word to have 3 double letters in a row.

(OOC: Lasair mentioned it, but appropriately, no one tried to take any of it from her. She's have given it, but it would have been inappropriate ;))
Eh? I thought Lasair split the 100 with everybody. Why did she keep it to herself again? I know Fen gave her the money directly, but it was the group's decision to return it, I thought Lasair was just acting as a representative.[/sblock]

The day you slept at The Oasis:

Travel fund: 2*4 = -8sp
[Distance traveled: 2221+ 32 = 2253 miles]
[Time: 58 days]

OOC: As I understand it, Conuld is casting extended Endure Elements on himself and Shadya every other day. Kurgahz is casting Endure Elements once per day on himself and Lasair. Cludge is toughing it out with a +6 save against the heat (+6 fort, +4 Endurance, -4 med. armor). The camels are... well, they're camels. Is that about right?

Let's say that the temperatures are above 90o from 7am to 12pm, above 110o from 12pm to 2pm, and back to 90+o from 2pm to 7pm. At night it is below 40o from 11pm to 5am. Does that sound right, or am I way off?

Does Cludge have a winter blanket that he's using? If not, he'll need to make 8 saves during the day (vs. heat) and 6 saves during the night (vs. cold)

The beginning of the 59th day of your journey is hot and dry. You know that the days will only become hotter and drier from here on. The Oasis is practically in the desert. As you ride on your camels along the rough trail through the desert, the piles of sand around you grow larger. You take a long break around 10 and wait until 4 for the hottest part of the day to pass. By the end of the day, all you can see from horizon to horizon is an endless expanse of nothing but sand. Even the mountains to the south have faded into the distance.

While the others have magical protection against the heat, Cludge is taking a beating under the hot Sairundan sun. Within the first few hours, he's exhausted (4 saves failed). He's grateful for the rest midday, and he dizzily fights through the afternoon haze until nightfall, when the group finally stops (10 nonlethal damage, fatigued).

You stop at no place in particular, and set up camp by the trail which is slowly disappearing into the dunes.

[Distance traveled: 2253+ 32 = 2285 miles]
[Time: 59 days]

OOC: Pause to set up camp, night watch, and yell at me for doing something incorrectly.

OOC: Ahem. If you insist. Conuld prepares only one (extended) EE for himself every other day; I thought Kurgahz's two EEs were for himself and Cludge, once he starts to flag, and the desert dwellers were going to rely on their ad hoc bonuses.

Edit: Just a thought: Conuld has +3 Survival above ground, thanks to Knowledge (nature) synergy, so with a DC 16 check, he can provide a +4 bonus to Fort saves while stationary, or +2 while travelling at half-speed, which we're not. If Conuld can make that check 40% of the time ("Er, try putting your shield over your head for shade - and take that helmet off"), it seems probable that the desert dwellers can do far better - although I confess it rankles that character backstory should effectively grant a whole slew of points in a cross-class skill! Did I mention that Conuld grew up not on a croft in the farming lands outside Orussus as he says, but in the acid swamps of... yeah. Thought not.

A week earlier: Cludge: What's a camel? *pause* Egad, we ride that? Looks like a horse what et a other horse. Then got beat wit' a ugly stick. Right, then I'll call ya Ugly.

After Day 1 in the desert: Cludge staggers into the camp area, sweating and pale, where he is not burnt. Gasping, he flops to the ground and drains his waterskin.
Connie, he says, I learnt somethin' taday - the desert ain't no place fer a dwarf from under tha mountain.
He leans in toward Conuld and says in whisper clearly loud enough for all to hear: Say, lad, if ye got any o' them magicks what makes people stick out the heat better, mebbe I could use one o' them after all. Jus' don' tell nobody.

OOC: Cludge does indeed have a blanket.

Conuld casts a quick glance at Kurgahz. "Yes, of course, Cludge," he says. "Tomorrow will be better."

OOC: Okay... Kurgahz might have some explaining to do :p I suppose Conuld will abandon his alternating days plan.

OOC: Can Kurgahz make a listen check to overhear the conversation? I'll try just in case. listen check (1d20+3=19) Per SRD, 15 is good enough to hear people whispering, but I need a 25 to hear what they are saying...so it's time for your unfriendly uncouth neighborhood half-orc to butt in... ;) Although reading it again, it says his whisper was loud enough for all to hear...soooooo

"What's that, Cludge? Ya say yer wantin' to beat the heat the easy way tomorrow? Let Conuld be then and talk ta me, 'cause I got that covered and had an extra prepared just in case somebody needed it." the half orc says with a stage whisper of his own to shield the dwarf from losing any face from the request.

Cludge looks a little mystified that Kurghaz could hear his sotto voce conversation, but nevertheless smiles at Kurghaz and says: Well now, I'd be mighty obliged, then. I must say I never knowed it could get so damned hot anywheres.

*Lasair raises an eyebrow.*

"I see. As you can probably tell, Shadya and I were neither joking nor insulting you when we told you that the land here is dangerous, especially for Westerners. We know that you are a hardy warrior, Cludge, but the wastes hold dangers that are different than those that can be battled with a sword...And what we are experiencing here is quite tame compared to what you Westerners call 'The Lands of Fire'. Fortunately, we are not headed even remotely in that direction."

OOC: Just to clarify, the girls were protected by magic, right? Let's set up a watch for tonight, and clarify exactly who's getting magicked when. I plan to spend a lot more in game time in the desert, with less fast forwarding, so if it takes a couple of game days to figure out a system, so be it.

Also, you all need 2 gallons of water per day, and the camels... the camels need 25 gallons of water every two weeks. We'll say you purchased them "full", so they have 6 days before their 25 gallons runs out. Hopefully you'll run into an oasis by then. :]

I'll let Phoenix do the water math.
