George R. R. Martin has updated his website -- the book is still not done, but he's making progress. He has been kind enough to post a sample chapter.

Thanks for the update. I won't read any of the sample charpetrs that he has made available becuase I want to be absorbed into the story when I read the WHOLE book.

Okay, this is the part where Tacky gets snarky.

Dude, Martin, WRITE!

Come on. For crying out loud, man, why can't you finish the freakin' book?* What is it with these people who start an enormous, epic-scale thing, thinking "Hey, no big, I've got it all taken care of", and then it gets out of control and messes them up, just like it messed up all the other authors? Criminey. OUTLINE. PLOT. THEN WRITE. If you've got writer's block, have a drink or smoke something mellow-inducing and get over it. That's what you get paid for.

I'm working full-time, and I can crank out a book every other year without the satisfaction of seeing any of them get published. You've got three hugely successful books and slavering fans. How can you NOT have finished this thing yet?

* - I am not aware of any tragedy or personal illness or anything that would keep Martin from writing the book. If he has gone through something massive and heavy and bad, of course, I am a pinhead who should just shut up.

Ah, another Robert Jordan reader :D

I think in GRRM's case, He planned it to be two trilogy's. He decided to ad another book to bridge stuff and help explain stuff that happened between them more. Since He added the book later, it was not as thought out as the other stuff in the series. I'm not saying it will be a bad book, but JRRM has a story he wants to tell, He wants to get it right.

I've had the darn thing pre-ordered at Books-a-Million for nearly a year now. He can take is time but he better make sure it's good, if he "Crossroads of Twilights" me I'll be pissed.

Oooooh, I like this one! i didn't realize this had become such an accepted term for 'screwing your fans after making them wait an extra year' ;)

It took me a while toget into Martin, but I really though the last one was his best work. I am hoping that this 'bridge' book continues the great stuff he had in the final.

I do believe that we have a new euphemism.

Like Ken, I have read in several spots where he basically wrote the 4th book then decided that the 5 year gap did not work and so he needed to write a book in-between the 3rd book and the 4th book.

His introduction was over 150 pages and if I understand correctly, he decided that that did not work either.

I have more confidence that I will not be Crossroads of Twilight'd by a guy who fesses up and says that some stuff just did not work.

Like many trauma survivors those of us who have been CoT'd, see perpetration in even the most mundane of situations.

Sorry to get off topic, but I heard that nothing happens to advance the plot in the book before Crossroads of Twilight as well, is that true? I'm glad I never got into WoT.
