A sword&board dwarf fighter

Hmm, I had never read the feat that close. So a trip weapon still provokes an attack of opportunity even with the improved trip feat.

Even without the feat you don't provoke an AoO when you trip with a weapon.

SRD:
Tripping with a Weapon

Some weapons can be used to make trip attacks. In this case, you make a melee touch attack with the weapon instead of an unarmed melee touch attack, and you don’t provoke an attack of opportunity.

I just read that. I was trying to figure out how a trip weapon was supposed to be effective.

A tripping weapon is effective because it has the following benefits:

1. People without Improved Trip can do so without provoking an AoO
2. If you fail your trip attempt, your target gets a free shot to trip you. With a tripping weapon, you can decide to drop the weapon instead of being tripped.
3. Some tripping weapons give bonuses on your trip attempts

OT: commas

[sblock]English is a very flexible language with regards to commas. I would not stress about your comma placement.

You are using a lot of commas, but that is typical for email and first drafts of documents. If you were writing a formal document in a multiple draft process, you would convert sentences with two or more commas into sentences with 0 or 1 commas. [/sblock]

Even with Sword and Board style, Power Attack and Cleave are very useful. Power Attack is useful anytime you need to hit something hard, like smashing a door down, sundering an enemy's weapon, or anything else.

Cleave is highly useful in the low levels of the game, when large numbers of 1 hit dice enemies roam about.

My optimum 3rd level Dwarven Fighter would be:

Racial Substitution Levels: 1st and 2nd Races of Stone Dwarven Fighter
1st level Feat: Power Attack
3rd level Feat: Cleave
1st level Fighter Substitution: Axe Focus: +1 to hit with all Axes
2nd level Fighter Substitution: Racial Enemies: +2 to damage against goblinoids, orcs, and giants

Weapon: Dwarven Waraxe, or whatever magic axe you can find
Armor: Full Plate and Large Shield (magical if you can get it)

For 4th level fighter feat, I'd pick up either Weapon Specialization (if you have a magic weapon you plan to keep for a long time) or Great Cleave (really mow down the enemy minions)
