That and, I just don't have the BAB to support a really good grapple check.
But it's not a bad idea if you don't mind giving up a few rounds to hang onto an enemy AND you have the hitpoints to survive a grapple.

(Side question: if the spellcaster has a touch-attack spell as well and hits with their touch, do the two damage results get added together for any grapple checks by the spellcaster and/or familiar?)
