Maybe in The Evil Empire. :p

Around here the average Int person would not even get an invitation to a job interview the high Int person applies for, because the requirements are not met, and without a personal meeting the Charisma cannot even be applied. ;)

Still, Charisma would be my second choice, followed by Dexterity and then Constitution (being sick sucks ;)).

Altho, instead of a single 18, three 14's and a 12 (starting at 10) sound a lot better, anyways.

Str 10 Dex 14 Con 12 Int 14 Wis 10 Cha 14

:D

I disagree. I find that many people of middling intelligence have a fine time in college. While those of hyper intelligence may excel, the only thing which matters at the end is the little piece of paper stating that one is now of an acceptable pedigree. Personally, I am objectively positive that I am far superior intellectually to any of my colleagues (I work in a factory, if you need verification), yet I find that experience and charisma often lead to more success than sheer mental prowess with regard to working under another individual. My opinion is that experience without intelligence yields little to no real value, but it's very difficult to convince others of this assertion, as a piece of paper and a pretty face are more tangible evidence, and people are often intimidated by those with greater intellectual power.

On the other hand, in the Information Age, intelligence lends itself to the success of the entrepeneur. However, I'd much prefer to be a stone cold chick magnet. It's a good thing I am.

charisma In today's society image is everything. Intelligence and wisdom are overrated. Having good social skills and a good image is much more important in many areas than being intelligent or wise. I've seen too many extremely intelligent people get rejected for jobs that went to dumb, yet charismatic people.
And I've seen the same thing happen but the otherway round.

Whilst were comparing real life to D&D, think a moment about all the characters you've played with high ability scores, did they always succeed on that critical moment? Nope, cause when the dice don't like you, the odds are against you no matter what kind of plusses you get from you're 18 INT/DEX/CON/etc. I don't need a super Int or Wis I just need a heck of a lot of luck, shame there's no ability score to improve for that one :p

For me, I quickly discarded the physical attributes (Str, Dex, Con).

That left Int, Wis, and Cha. Personally, I'd prefer to be wise over intelligent(just a personality thing for me) but you can be the wisest person in the world and still be the poorest and living in obscurity. So I discounted Wis.

That left Int and Cha. This was a bit tougher. At first I thought Int cuz if you're smart you can do anything right? Ahah! But here's the rub: without wisdom you'll probably end up squandering your great intellectual powers (i.e. you'll be the smartest, but also the most naive. e.g. you'll create the light bulb only to watch your assistant patent it).

That got me thinking about Cha. Ya' know what... you can do anything with a strong personality and smooth talking that you can do with Int. Who cares if I actually understand quantum physics; all I need to be able to do is convince YOU that I can do it - and that's where Cha comes in.

So I picked Cha. Think of all the things you could do if you had the ability to sway people to your side of the argument. Think of all the famous people in the world who weren't the brightest or the most physically strong, but had the strongest personality and ability to get the job done.

Yup, Cha would be my choice.

edit: as an aside, it's interesting that Cha is probably the least popular stat in game terms but probably one of the most sought after in the real world. Interesting...

Wisdom. Is it more important that you have great abilities or that you know what to do with them? That's wisdom. Intelligence is the next mosy impotant.

I see that everyone realizes that physical abilities are unimportant in the 21st century. In D&D, there would probably be more dexterity votes. And less wisdom. Wonder if that's a sign of the times or a criticism of D&D.

In a D&D world, people have a tendency to get into more physical conflicts then we do. So of course thier physical stats would be a better choice for survival. Where mental stats are a benifit in our current world.

Easy, Dexterity!!

I've already got a decent intelligence score (14 or 15 by my guess), and I'm hardly ever really sick (I'm going to say a solid 14), my Charisma is Improving (though it still would have been my second choice), I'm pretty strong when I need to be (Strength of 12 or so), but I am miserably uncordinated... I'd imagine having a Dexterity of 18 would help that

Str 12, Dex 9 (18 if I get my way), Con 14, Int 15, Wis 11, Cha 10 (used to be 9 but when I hit level four I put a point into it  )

Being the iconic bookish wizard (and a real nerd in the real life), I'd go for Intelligence.
As a counterweight, I have a real-life Wisdom of 5 or 6. No joke.

While it would be nice to have an 18 in anything, I pick Constitution because of all the stats, I'd think having an 18 in this one would have the best chance at increasing my lifespan, increasing the number of healthy days within that lifespan, and decreasing the chance of suffering from physical ailments.
