Actual Play podcasts

Also,

What kind of episode release length do you prefer? Each episode is length of session (like 3 hours or so)? Or always set length (like maybe 1 hour per episode)?

40 to 60 minutes, erring on the shorter side. I wish most podcasts would try to keep it around or under the 1 hour mark, to be honest. I dropped a lot of (video) gaming podcasts out of my rotation because the unfocused ramblings were often boring.

The first 188 episodes of Critical Hit are brilliant and have great production values. I've actually listened through those a couple of times. It jumps the Terrasque after that, and unfortunately they didn't move to 5e, so I've stopped listening to new episodes. In general I enjoy listening to combat in podcasts, but the fact that high level 4e combat is super slow and boring to listen to doesn't help Critical Hit at all. A single combat for them now easily takes 3-4 hours.

I'd say that audio quality is essential to a podcast, but it doesn't need to be overproduced with a lot of sound effects and the like. I think that's why I've stayed away from Godsfall.

Really wish Nerd Poker was still going. They didn't get much D&Ding done, but I loved listening to them riff.

I do like a good 60-70 minute episode a week. I listen in the car on a long commute.

Since you are all pretty familiar with the various AP podcasts, I'd love your feedback on how to improve our own. You won't offend me if you think it's just garbage, just let me know.

Like I said before, first season starts off rough with audio quality and the episodes are session-length, usually. We tried to play/review Princes of the Apocalypse. We also have a few episodes interpspersed where we played Fiasco and another where we tried a Lamentations of the Flame Princess module.

We just started Out of the Abyss, which has much better quality, shorter episode length and, IMO, better material from WotC to work with.

Oh yea, what does everyone think about players talking "in character" with "acting" vs speaking as character without acting vs speaking in third person?

Do you prefer one over the other? Does it just depend on if the player is good at it or it is interesting?

I prefer a mix. "'Get out of our way or I'll put you through the door you're guarding.' Khegg Steadfast glares at the guard and cracks his knuckles. I'm hoping Khegg can intimidate this guard into getting out of our way." Clear statement of goal and approach with some active and some descriptive roleplaying.

I think one of the things that a set length (around 60 minutes) shows is that there is some editing being done. It also helps to make sure the podcast is updating regularly. If you guys are playing for 3 hours each week, I would, at a guess, say that would probably edit down to two episodes of around 60 minutes. Ideally, that means that each week you play and edit (which I know probably takes more time than playing which is why so many people are putting out unedited podcasts or switching to streaming) you are building a buffer. Nothing kills a show for me like it not updating.

Excellent point. Thanks!

I wonder how my sessions would be edited. Except for occasional 3-5 minute breaks for nature, it's go-go-go from start to finish. If a gaming session could have a third edited out, one wonders if that time is being used wisely.

True. I think a lot of the stuff that we have edited out has been either 1) potentially offensive comments (hasn't been too many of those) and 2) downtime when we end up researching rules, leveling up or our DM had to read up on the material (because we were attempting a low-prep play-through of the material). I'm not sure how much that actually comes out to, though, as i don't don the editing. I'm pretty sure 85%+ of our sessions end up in the final cut.
