Adamantine armor

This suit of armor is reinforced with adamantine, one of the hardest substances in existence. While you're wearing it, any critical hit against you becomes a normal hit.

That is what it says for adamantine armor. However, this would suggest it is the case for any critical hit, which seems strange considering how does a set of metal plate protect you against a pyschic attack or a could of poisonous gas etc?

I think you are to worried about RAW. It is pretty clear what the intent is - go with that.

Bear in mind that the "Adamantine armour" in the DMG is a magic item. Its not simply armour that happens to incorporate adamantine in its construction.

It prevents critical hits from non-physical sources as part of its enchantment, just like it prevents critical hits from physical strikes that don't actually hit an armoured part of the body.

If the attack requires an attack roll against AC, then presumably armor offers protection against those attacks. Adamantine armor offers fortified protection, and as such would be capable of negating critical hits from those sources, regardless of the damage type.

If you need an in-game justification consider adamantine similar to lead for X-Rays. Superman can't see through lead, adamantine offers some additional help against psychic attacks.

Or just say it doesn't protect from criticals from psychic attacks - I can't imagine it comes up very often.
