Adamantite Shields & Weapons

First Post
Hi all, was wondering if i could seek some advice.

My character in a recent campaign has just picked up a large adamantite shield, with the original intention of reforging this into an adamantite long sword.

Having browsed through the rules, i am struggling with a few things:

a) What does an adamantite shield give you ? The DMG details benefits of both adamantite weapons (ignore hardness <20), and armour (damage reduction), but neglects to mention shields (does it count as armour ?)

b) How would one re-forge the item into a sword ? Looking at the craft rules it would take you approximatly 60weeks with a DC of 25 and rolling 20's every week to forge an adamantite sword! Im sure there must be easier ways than this (they only cost 3000gp shop price)

c) Is there any other way of reforging the sword...I have the 3000gp of material to make it, so i am kind of loathe to pay out another 2,100gp for a limited wish (which was suggested by the DM)...

Thanks in advance

Well, as for light and heavy shields.. you can certainly treat them as weapons (shield bash). Bucklers and Tower shields just receive the improved hardness and hp.

a) a very tough shield that won't easily be sundered ... shield bash is effective, especially against doors/walls/mages with stoneskin, using max. power attack and ignoring a lot of hardness.

b) you need a specialist :D ... or a team of smiths so they can work together, continualy getting up to +10 or so for aiding another and working round the clock so you speed things up by a factor of 4

c) polymorph any object, warp metal ?

The smithing is very easy: just buy a (couple of) scrolls of Fabricate...or hire a wizard with the Craft (Weapon) skill @ +10 modifier (so he can take 10).

Tower shields can't be made of adamantite, there's not enough metal there to be effected by it. Tower shields are made of wood by default, to make one fully out of metal would make it a lot heavier than the stats in the book.

I don't think you can have an Admantine Shield acting as Armor. Check this entry from the SRD:

Adamantine: This ultrahard metal adds to the quality of a weapon or suit of armor. Weapons fashioned from adamantine have a natural ability to bypass hardness when sundering weapons or attacking objects, ignoring hardness less than 20. Armor made from adamantine grants its wearer damage reduction of 1/- if it's light armor, 2/- if it's medium armor, and 3/- if it's heavy armor. Adamantine is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is included in the prices given below. Thus, adamantine weapons and ammunition have a +1 enhancement bonus on attack rolls, and the armor check penalty of adamantine armor is lessened by 1 compared to ordinary armor of its type. Items without metal parts cannot be made from adamantine. An arrow could be made of adamantine, but a quarterstaff could not.
Only weapons, armor, and shields normally made of metal can be fashioned from adamantine. Weapons, armor and shields normally made of steel that are made of adamantine have one-third more hit points than normal. Adamantine has 40 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 20.
Type of Adamantine Item Item Cost Modifier
Ammunition +60 gp
Light armor +5,000 gp
Medium armor +10,000 gp
Heavy armor +15,000 gp
Weapon +3,000 gp

I think you can only get the Admantine weapon bonus for Shields. The upside is that you only pay 3000GP for it instead of 5000GP or more. Downside is that you get no DR x/-.

Note how it says adds to a weapon or suit of armor? I'd assume this means you can't even do it to shields! Yeah thats it!
