My best would have been 28 :) Init (1d20+8=19)

Illarion frowns and then shakes his head at the sound of close-by gargoyles. He pulls his sleaves up and raises the staff in front of him.
 



Mikara, with her back to Raiyek glances over her shoulder,

"Keep your eyes on his."

She looses two arrows at the gargoyle to the right of the door and darts in a flanking move to the south.

"Damn!" She shouts as one of her arrows makes a sloppy exit from her bow.

Another sloppy arrow intended for the same gargoyle flies from Mik's bow. She can't afford the time to curse. She unstoppers and downs a flask of syrupy orange liquid that burns as it goes down.

Girl! keep your head clear!

Mikara reacts faster than most of the others can blink. Mind you, they may have been lulled into complacency by the mind numbing lack of action, but Mikara's unease with the city seems to have kept her perpetually at the ready. Arrows fly from her bow as she does two double flips. Two of the arrows shatter against the stone exterior of her gargoyle target next to the door, but one cracks solidly into a joint, cracks forming between the shoulder and chest.

Raiyek glares at the ugly beast and reaches for his sword and shield. "You are mistaken, monster. The gods fight with us this day!"

"Yes, yes, you are quite fearsome for an elf," the beholder chuckles, "You stay there."

And with that, the beholder launches a series of eye beam attacks at the party members. A blue eye beam hits Raiyek straight in the chest and he feels his extremities stiffen and harden under the magic.

A green beam hits Lerrick. Under its power, Lerrick feels helpless and terrified. Briefly overwhelmed she flees from the beholder. A moment later, her reason returns and she stops running.

Two different beams fail to hit the necromancer and monk.

The gargoyles seem to shake off the remainder of the spell's binding effects, but as of yet they haven't attacked the party.

Vermitrax, having sidestepped the blue ray aimed at his head, simply walks away from the threatening gargoyles. He doesn't seem overly worried by the situation, and calmly plants his staff on the ground before conjuring arcane runes around him. One after the other, the runes appear as he pronounces the words of power and makes the appropriate gestures. As the incantation finishes, cold coalesces behind the beholder, taking the shape of a giant claw. The thing cleaves into the beholder (hopefully), garbing it.

Using Bigy's icy Hand: Vermitrax conjures the hand, and it attacks the Beholder, with a 24 vs its ref, for 15 dmg. If that hits, its grabbed. Also, at the end of Vermitrax's turn he will sustain the hand as a minor action, which will deal 1d8+7 additional damage if the initial attack was a hit.
 


OOC: I checked the compendium, and it reads as if the Sustain minor action deals the damage provided that the creature is grabbed. So the extra damage is not dealt on the initial hit. VV has to perform the Sustain minor action for the extra damage to be dealt provided that the target was hit and grabbed (Which I believe is what VV said). I think what makes it seem odd is that VV has the minor action prepared so that he can use it on the same turn as the initial action, though this seems legal.
