Either way, your left with a choice, or you can haggle ;).

Haggle, eh? Well, it's in Fenwick's nature to do that, and this weekend I've been balancing this against how much I dislike playing out shopping trips. But here goes:

Fenwick turns over the various pieces in his hands, making various approving and disapproving noises. Eventually, he sidles over to the shopkeeper, and calmly begins to speak.

"Me, Fenwick, negotiator dealing in hides for important but now missing tribe, somewhat interested in armor and also in boots, and anxious to deal with Sworc. This look like good enough piece, although style not fit Fenwick exactly. Fenwick offer remuneration plus items in trade for them. For seven hundred bright and shiny pieces of gold--ready cash on hand, Fenwick will take armor and boots off hands of Sworc. Fenwick will even, as bonus, throw in suit of hide armor. Sworc ask 'Why Sworc want beat up bloodstained armor?' Fenwick glad to explain. This--" he gestures at his armor. "This not just armor. This armor with history. This authentic orcish-made armor. This armor made from hide of grey-furred bear who live for very long time with distinctive toe missing from foot, so that people know it same bear for years. Hunters finally kill bear after many days hunt of which people still sing. Hide then taken and hand-crafted by picturesque ethnic group in authentic primitive style, and given to mighty young warrior, who then outgrow it and give armor to chief negotiator of ethnic minority--Fenwick who is now talking to Sworc--who wear armor in fights against bandits, against rats, against zombies in middle of ocean, against more bandits, and other mighty battles also. Fenwick also bring armor across miles of ocean from other side of world, all so that armor can be traded to Sworc along with seven hundred bright and shiny pieces of gold in exchange for chain armor and nice boots. So, what does Sworc think of offer from Fenwick?"

OOC: ROTFLMFAO! Ben. I've got an idea. If you retcon make the bear the same one that tried to attack you all while getting honey out of that tree, you've got a deal.

Just remember, when some boring RP scene comes along, think of it as your opportunity to be creative, humorous, and disruptive.

[sblock=ooc]Hrm. I'm not sure that works. The bear was killed in that bit with the honey tree. However, I can come up with a method that this particular bear was killed, if you'd like.

For what it's worth, I don't mind social role-playing at all, it's just that I've had some really dull experiences playing out shopping trips, where we took up half a session equipping ourselves with standard gear.

[sblock=BB]Aw... that's too bad, I was really hoping for something like "honeybaked armor" oh well....[/sblock]

[sblock=BB]I'm sorry for your experiences, and I'm sorry to make this RP session drag, but this shopping day has been a necessary evil for me in order to introduce some elements of the story that may come into play later.[/sblock]Sworc has been looking sideways at Fenwick all evening up to this point, and when the orc begins to approach him, he gets visibly nervous.
"Fenwick who is now talking to Sworc--who wear armor in fights against bandits, against rats, against zombies in middle of ocean, against more bandits, and other mighty battles also.
Sworc goes pale when the descriptions of Fenwicks exploits are rattled off, noting the bloodstains and the gashes in the hide, he swallows hard and attempts to put some comfortable space between himself and the barbarian, but Fenwick doesn't get the hint. Every time the shopkeeper tries to slide away, he only manages to encourage the orc to draw closer until the smell of the barbarian's breath begins to make him nauseous.
"So, what does Sworc think of offer from Fenwick?"
"Uh..." Sworc stammers for words, "Uh... ...Okay?"

The sheepish expression is almost a question as if hoping not to upset the brute. Fenwick however is oblivious to the shopkeeper's fear and smiles broadly, a gesture that is mistaken by Sworc to mean that the negotiations have gone sour and the orc is now going to do him bodily harm, "O-o-okay!" he says, a little more resolutely, albeit fearfully, "D-d-deal. S-s-seven hundred and the hide armor. N-n-no problem."

Sworc runs through the cellar, scooping up the armor and the boots, and practically shoves them into Fenwick's hands. He's so scared that he almost forgets that he's not being robbed. Upon remembering this, he plucks up the courage to ask for the money and the suit of armor, "Th-th-that'll b-b-be s-s-seven h-h-hundred g-g-gold p-p-pieces."

[sblock=BB]Sweet! Chief Negotiator of ethnic minority is back in action! Great post.[/sblock]
"Should we try the scroll?" Gensai asked in a hushed tone. "Or is there something else to be done in the city? I'd like the at least report the suspicious behavior of the tall man, before we go."

Riardon

"Good thinking... Gensai."

"Have you a room where I and my friends can change our armors?" Riardon asks the still shaking merchant.

"Oh sure. Right here," Sworc opens another roughly constructed door that reveals another closet-like chamber, cluttered with odds and ends, lending just enough privacy to convince one that it will do.

After returning:

"So, much better, and lighter than this leather. I never understood my elven cousins appeal for it.

Now, let us take care of this other thing and then use the scroll.
" Riardon says obvious happy. Getting new items seems to have this effect upon him.

Fenwick returns from the back room in his gleaming new armor and spiffy boots, and places his old, surprisingly well-crafted and well kept hide armor on the counter, along with the promised gold from his backpack.
