[Adventure] Murder Most Foul! Part 2 (Judge: EvolutionKB)

"Let's take a look at this door, then," Vex said after Knoepf had finished. "If we can't crack it, we'd be better off checking the other door rather than waiting around..."

[sblock= OOC] Can we get the double doors open enough to get access to the bar to chop it through, or can we only tell that it is barred (but not get TO the bar)? Failing that, since the double doors open into this room, the hinges ought to be on this side- can we pop the hinges out and peel off one side of the door? If that doesn't work, I'm about out of ideas- we'll need to try the single door first. [/sblock]

"Let's take a look at this door, then," Vex said after Knoepf had finished. "If we can't crack it, we'd be better off checking the other door rather than waiting around..."

"Agreed," says Acre eagerly. "I hate waiting around here for something bad to happen. Better to start something bad ourselves!"

The hinges on the doors are on the group's side of the room, but they are protected by the metal bands in front of them. The hinges are attached to the wall on this side, but they are more like vertical hooks that the metal band cross pieces are attached to (see attached picture of a single door). The iron bands are attached to the wooden doors with thick heavy nails. So, it would be very easy to lift the door off the hinges if the door were open, but if the door is closed, it's impossible to lift the door in the doorway.

The wide heavy nails in the bands, on the other hand, are accessible. It would take some serious deconstruction to remove the nails for all of the bands and then attack the hinges. Even then, the door would still be barred shut on the opposite side.

The bar itself cannot be attacked with an axe or any thick tools due to the very slim slit between the two doors, even if they are pulled on. The only way to break the doors down with an axe would be to put a good sized hole in the doors large enough for the axe head to swing through and eventually break through the bar. This, of course, will take time and effort, and will make a lot of noise.

A thin tool to cut the bar would work, but it would need to be a heavily serrated blade to cut through the wood of the bar. A simple dagger will not do it. The distance between the two doors when pulled on is only about a quarter of an inch or so. Way too thin for even a sword.

The outer doors are well constructed like this also. The single door is not constructed anywhere near this well. Any of the larger PCs think they could break it down with 2 or 3 good heavy slams, kicks, or hammer blows, or possibly Malehan could just pick the lock on it.

[sblock=OOC]
Note: This door is supposed to be a difficult challenge to also challenge the players, not just the PCs. The players need to come up with a good plan to get past them if they want to get past them quickly. Some skill rolls won't do it. The players need to think past this puzzle.

The PCs can always bash down the door with any sort of hammer-like or axe-like tools or weapons that they have available. But, that will be noisy and time consuming and will definitely alert anyone inside this building due to the fact that it is not muffled construction noise like the construction the Goblins were doing. A certain amount of noise is expected because the Goblins were making noise, but if you repeatedly bang on the door, it will reverberate further into the building. A few bangs on the door probably wouldn't be noticed, but continuous noisy deconstruction probably will be.

"I've got an idea. Vex, take that hammer." Malehan grabs the wedge and put it between the double door. He force it and squeeze it just a bit under the bar that block the door. "Hit there. We need to open it barely enough to be able to pass that rope between the door. We will use it to lift the bar. And if it doesn't move, we will attach something really heavy to the other end of the rope and throw the thing in the hole, with the power develop by the block and tackle, we can hope to break the bar or the door."

Acre grins and then laughs out loud, imagining various objects, living and otherwise, that could be used for a counter-weight.

"Malehan, I like how your mind works. Friends, shall we give it a try?."

Like most buildings in Sharn, this one too has perpendicular cross beams. With the help of the others holding him up, Malehan has to bore a hole in the ceiling above a beam in order to get the rope through. But, it doesn't take long before he has the block and tackle attached to a beam at the ceiling.

"Too many years of war, stuck on a ship with the resource you have on board, when unexpected situation arise, you can't go to the local store to buy what you are missing, you do with what you have on board." explains Malehan while he attach the block and tackle. He then jump down to the ground. "Thinking of it, Vex, move the wedge half a foot higher, where is the bar. With some luck, when you'll strike at the wedge, you might weaken the beam, and we will still be able to put the rope around."

He then turns around to Garrick "Collect the ropes attach around the hole. It seems there is no weight good enough, so we will have to pull. We will all pull from the other side, that way, when the door will break down, no one will be push in the hole. Tight them together and save me one for the bar"

[SBLOCK=OOC]Here the plan:

1) Vex open a crack between the double door, using the wedge and hammer. The wedge is straight in line with the bar, so he might be lucky enough to break the bar.

2) Assuming the bar is not broken by the wedge, we attach a rope around the bar. Pass the rope over the bar by the crack and then pull it back and then attach it to the block and tackle. Attach other rope to the other end of the block and tackle so people can pull from the other side of the hole.

3) First, try to lift the bar with the rope and maybe a sword or other item.

4) If that doesn't work, we all pull the rope until either the door, the rope or the block and tackle break. Vex could even try to continue to hit the wedge to weaken more the bar if the wedge is long enough to reach the bar.[/SBLOCK]
