(Adventure) The Burning Tower (Knight Otu Judging) [Concluded]

The Tower's Final Room

Climbing the stairs, the party passes through another blue field, apparently signifying another point of no return.

Spellcraft DC 12:
As you climb the stairs, you can sense that the top floor is warded in some way. The ward reduces the ability of magical energies to pass into or out of the area, making the shielded room especially suitable to magical experimentation.

As you enter the top floor, you can immediately see the central problem plaguing the tower. The tower has a completely open floor plan on this level, and the central portion is surrounded by yet another one way force field. Inside the forcefield, the area is filled with a noxious looking gas. Apparently the field isn't completely air tight, as some of the smoke poors out the top and flows out into the now dark night sky of Orussus.

The bad news is the smoke is extremely thick, and you cannot see what's inside without going in after it. The good news, however, is that from this vantage point you can easilly monitor the situation and react quickly if it worsens.

Outside the forcefield, you see a small pedestal upon which sits a spellbook. A sense of foreboding fills you as you look upon it from across the room. The spellbook is likely the Wizards most precious posession, and any insult to it would probably make the wizard a permanent and deadly enemy. You can only guess at the traps which might surround it.

'Yallume!²' Morulas exclaims 'we found it.'

Raising a slender finger towards the small pedestal, the elf cheerfully states the obvious
'Rilithornes spellbook. Right there on the open page would be the solution to this riddle. Lets go see what kind of spell the poor Wizard botched!'

At last!

"Careful! Don't touch it. He might have all sorts of interesting traps all around it. Nars begins carefully moving toward the pedestal searching the path for traps and until he gets close enough to search the pedestal for traps. If there are traps on the floor, he will do his best to point them out to the group. Once a path is found to the book, he says, "All clear. Percy, you might want to take a look at this. I doubt its written in Dwarven."

OOC: Search +6.

Ishmael shook his head at Fant's question. He didn't have a clue of what to do next or what lay ahead of them.

But he did know that there was danger about. He girded himself for another fight or at least, another threat.

Aproaching the spellbook

Nars tries to remain calm as he slowly searches his way up to the book. While he is confident in his skills with more mundane traps, he can't help but recall the invisible glyphs he found on the first floor. Is the tingle coming from the hairs on the back of his neck an indication of some mystic trap, or is it merely an extension of the pounding of his heart?

He makes it up to the book safely, and calls Persephone over. He has a nagging feeling that the somewhat unpredictable princess shouldn't actually touch the book, but it's merely a hunch.

Stalking carefully behind Nars, Morulas leans over the dwarfs shoulder to get a peek at the mysterious tome.

'We may not need to touch the Tome if we can decipher what Rilithorne was working on.' the elf whispers in a hushed, but hopeful tone.

'Besides, Rilithorne likely couldn't remedy his mistake because he went into the smoke to have a look at it, or was trapped in this ward to begin with, unable to get back to his spellbook after the mishap. Walking in blindly may just leave us in the same predicament.'

((OoC: Is the book closed or opened to a certain page?))

The book is open, and several members of the party are able to take a look at it. While many arcane symbols are present, there are also anotations written in common. It appears that the book is open to a fairly minor spell called "Pyrotechnics."

Fant makes a noise not unlike hmph. "Well, I could have guessed that," she jokes. She taps with a gauntleted hand against her mailed thigh, a gesture not unlike rubbing your chin when your hands are encased in steel. "Persephone, a priest I once worked with had a minor spell that could analyze magical affects. Have you anything similar?"

Gorefoot - Gnome Barbarian 1

As Gorefoot steps into the room, his shoulders sag slightly in relief.

"We finally found the fire." He says pointing to the smoke filled cylinder and pulling out his waterskin, "Well, who's going to help me put it out?"
