(Adventure) The Burning Tower (Knight Otu Judging) [Concluded]

Rodimus isn't happy at all with what just happened with the dagger. He peers into the smoke, trying to get another glimpse of whatever it is inside the field. Then he presents a question to the others, nodding his head towards the smoke.
"The mage?"

Ishmael loosened the shield upon his arm as he considered the possibilities of fighting the creature in the smoke. Whatever it was, it did not seem inhibited by the smoke at all though the field appeared to cage it.

The smoke would provide it with some concealment. Ishmael touched the miniature archery target that hung from his neck, the arcane focus for one of the few spells he knew.

"Perhaps we should try to extinguish the fire to dispel the smoke somehow..." he ventured. He only had one waterskin for the task so he was doubtful.

Ishmael isn't entirely certain their is an actual fire to extinguish. Even here, standing next to the containment field, he can feel no heat. Could the field be responsible for hiding it? A powerfull effect if so. It may also simply be that where magic is involved the phrase "where there's smoke, there's fire" does not apply. Unfortunately, the smoke makes it difficult to see what this final containment field contains. You recall that the "butler" puppet at the entrance discussed the containment fields and vaguely mentioned the whereabouts of the mage; those comments may be all that you have to go on.

Fant considers the situation. "Either Rilthorne is elsewhere, or the creature slew him, or perhaps he became the creature... but in any case, it seems likely that slaying the beast may well solve the problem." She considers. How large is the area contained within the field? It may well be possible to simply fire into the one-way field with missile weapons and lay low the creature, although Fant doubts they will be so lucky. The top of the field is also open, perhaps further possibilities lie there. She repeats an earlier unanswered question. "Your majesty, Sir Ishmael, have you any magics to analyze what's going on here?"

ooc: I.e, detect magic+spellcraft checks might be useful. :)

The containment field has a radius of 25 feet.
Mmm. Too large for random firing- we'd have to lure it to the edge where it's actually visible and hope the first salvo finishes it off or that it's stupid enough to repeat the process. Doesn't strike me as a tenable strategy. We've got to negate the smoke, somehow, since it's clear we can't fight effectively in it- can't breathe, can't see- while it can do both of those things just fine. That means either getting rid of the smoke and entering the field, or getting it out out of the field. She waits for a verdict from the more magically inclined.

ooc: Yowza! Radius, or diameter? How big is this tower, anyway?

"I am afraid that I am not versed in the practical lore of spell-wielding. I can only detect the general presence of magick. Methinks that much has already been confirmed by the lack of heat in the presence of so much smoke."

At first, the Deep Halfling wasn't sure that slaying the creature would be a good idea. Given its violent reaction against intrusion however, he surmised that it might be just as deadly toward the citizens of Orussus should it find freedom. He had to find out.

Ishmael thought of using his Divine Inquisition ability. If the barrier held in the smoke, it might also block his own magickal senses. Most likely, nothing would be revealed. However, he was willing to try just about anything. He focused his divine-enhanced sight into the smoky area in the hopes of a better insight of the creature.

"Perhaps we can talk to it" he suggested to the more diplomatic members of the party.

OOC: There is nothing besides the spell book outside the containment field? How big is the pedestal? Could it be knocked over by a crossbow shot?

IC: "i-I don't know much about magic, but maybe the, er, spell book is related to the field. If we could, ah, move the tome, maybe it might disrupt the spell. M-maybe I could knock it over with a well placed crossbow shot. Everyone else could use the field for cover in case it explodes." Nars trails off, "Sorry. Probably a dumb idea."

"Worth considering, if all else fails." In reference to Ishmael's suggestion of negotiation, she shrugs. "We'd have to possess a common language, which I'm not sure we do, even if it can speak."

ooc: IIRC, spellcraft can be used untrained. Of interest (whether it's Persephone or Ishmael, or perhaps both, doing the looking) are the pedestal for traps, the barrier, the smoke itself, and the creature, as well as anything else that may simply be "in the room." Strength and school are all of interest, although you'll have to translate the Aracanese for the rest of us. :)

The tower's diameter is 60 feet -- the warded circle takes up most of this floor of the tower. The pedestal and spellbook are the only objects outside the circle. If there are any work tables or other peaces of furniture, they are obscured by smoke.

The pedestal is fairly small, only large enough to hold the spellbook up to a convenient reading height for a standing person. It could be readilly abused in a number of ways, and knocking it over with a crossbow bolt is certainly possible. Doing so with a 10' pole would be easy, but a crossbow bolt would work if you were acurate enough.

Spellcraft DC 17:
The smoke that can be produced by a Pyrotechnics spell is dense and difficult to see through. The noxious nature of the smoke makes it difficult to fight in, but strangely it will not actually cause asphyxiation.
