(Adventure) The Burning Tower (Knight Otu Judging) [Concluded]

OOC: Was Persephone able to determine if any objects were in there w/her dagger? Or what type and power of magic it was?

ooc: I've actually been mulling that over a bit, and haven't decided for sure. My original thought (which I may have explained badly) was that she lost line of effect to the dagger, and that the spell ended when that occurred. I'm not altogether sure I'm correct about that, maybe you don't need to maintain line of effect. If you want to throw an argument at me about it, I'd be happy to consider it.

Persephone gives the dagger a slight push forward, trying to tempt the unknown monster into stabbing itself. It's extremely hard to judge where exactly the field begins and ends, and persephone finds that even that slight push places the dagger inside the field completely. With the field between Persephone and the dagger, she loses line of effect, and the dagger falls to the floor amidst the smoke, quickly disapearing from view.

OOC: Sorry. Somehow I completely missed this post of yours. I won't make issue with this.

"I don't think the wizards is OK. If he were, he'd be here fixing things. He's been teleported away somewhere, probably outside the tower. That thing in there is more likely part of the problem. So dumping the spellbook in there probably wouldn't help."

'True, but we might still achieve some success by working with the spellbook ourselves.'
Morulas thinks aloud as he walks back to the raised podest.

'What we face inside the barrier is the effect of the spell opend up in the book. And it doesn't seem to diminish with time as arcane spells usually tend to do. Maybe there is an enchantment in the pedestal itself that keeps this transmutation alive. Or maybe the mystical attributes of this very laboratory.'
the elf muses, leaning carefully over the opend book to study Rilithornes writing.

'We likely could undo the spell with this tome somehow. The solution might be as simple as merely closing Rilithornes book!' Without giving anyone much time to protest, Morulas unsheathes his slender sword, wedges it between the spellbooks binding and the pedestal it rest upon and attempts to close the arcane tome with a careful flick of the elvencraft blade.

Messing with the Spellbook

The spellbook closes with Morulas's carefull flick. He manages to do this without damaging the spellbook or knocking it off the pedestal. There's a moment of silence in which most members of the party are conscious of their pounding hearts, wondering if a lethal trap might be triggered by the Elf's bold action. For the moment, though, nothing happens for good or ill.

It occurs to you that from this position, you would be able to tell immediately if the situation deteriorated. While you have watched so far, everything seems stable. It is likely everything will remain unchanged until you intervene.

Persephone

"Yes, we're a bit out of ideas, aren't we. It seems very dangerous to go in there. We'd probably end up fighting an unknown opponent under very difficult circumstances. An opponent that could conceivably be Rilithorn himself. Yet what else are we to do?"

"I don't suppose we're really in a hurry. This appears to offer no danger to the community. Let's give it some more thought."

"Well, if we're gonna go in there I'd like a better look at that creature. I'm not saying we should, just if we're going to. Perhaps we should rest up a bit first if we must go in. I wish we could find a way to disrupt that smoke. How will we deactivate the field once inside?"

With that, Nars pulls out 3 copper pieces and walks over close to the field. He flips one copper piece at a time into field hoping to draw the creature over. He also listens carefully to weather he can hear anything from inside the field - the creature or the coin hitting the floor on the other side of the field. Before the party enters the field, he will drink the potion of blur.

OOC: Spot +4, Listen +4
I updated Nars's character sheet to account for the crossbow bolt he shot and the copper thrown through the field, and added the potion of blur.

You can easily hear the coins hitting the floor, and you manage to lure the creature towards the edge of the field for another moment, though it retreats as quickly as it appears. It seems to be a cloud of some sort of living smoke, with sparks of light appearing and disapearing rapidly along its surface.

OOC: Those coppers will eventually be recoverable, I imagine... I might forget about them so I'm mentioning that now. Persephone's dagger, too.

Persephone

"Perhaps its unintelligent. If we're going to fight it, and I think it will attack us if we enter, then let's loosen it up a bit first. Toss another coin in, Nars." Persephone loads and aims her crossbow. "We'll be ready for it this time."

"This creature certainly does not look friendly. Lady Fant, what do you suggest?" Nars asks as he loads his crossbow and draws out another copper.

"Persephone read my mind exactly." Fant readies her own bow. "Everyone, get ready." She'll make sure even those people who might not have bows get daggers or similar to throw. "If it's truly stupid, this might work more than once; failing that, we'll have to hope that we kill it on the first salvo. Otherwise, we'll have to go in and hope that killing it will disperse the smoke. Ishmael, if it comes to that, use your wand until we're up to full strength." Fant doesn't like the last option- if the smoke remains after the creature is killed, they may all suffocate. Another thought occurs to her. "Your Majesty, if we go in, you should remain outside in case any further options present themselves." She won't do any good in a melee, and if it all goes to hell she'll be able to convey our regrets. Fant thinks it most likely killing the creature will disperse the smoke, but the grim thought still occurs to her.

"All right, Nars, if you'd be so good as to sacrifice another penny...."
