(Adventure) The Burning Tower (Knight Otu Judging) [Concluded]

Persephone

OOC: Persephone has failed her spellcraft roll yet again, I'll have to take some more ranks in that...

Persephone continues to move the dagger into the smokey enclosure. The spell lasts as long as she concentrates on it, and she feels no rush. Walking around the enclosure, she sees if she can push the dagger to the other side, where she can see it again. If so, this would indicate it didn't hit anything. She'll do this several times, if possible, at about knee height, so see if it is stopped by anything.

Once she's satisfied that she's gotten all she can out of the dagger, she allows it to fall at the edge of the sheild. Then she casts a detect magic (spellcraft +3), and try to find out anything she can about the magic involved on this floor.

Fant "Either Rilthorne is elsewhere, or the creature slew him, or perhaps he became the creature... but in any case, it seems likely that slaying the beast may well solve the problem."

'Your majesty, Sir Ishmael, have you any magics to analyze what's going on here?'

'Well, I doubt that the teachings of the arcane will help us much here. Besides, of course, divining that Rilithorne had prepared a rather simple spell for pyrotechnics.'
Morulas argues thoughtfully after watching the whole commotion.

'Rilithorne surely never intended this, and his knowledge on the subject likely surpasses that of all of us combined. No. The solution to this mystery must be found elsewhere.'
the elf concludes as his hawklike eyes study the laboratory for any further clues.

'And yes, he may well be the creature inside this ward and the creature may well be the cause of the smoke itself, even though Rilithornes puppet-butler mentioned some sort of automated procedures that would shunt the Wizard to a safer location.

Carefully caressing the fading scar below the torn remains of his leather, where the animated Armor had slashed the elf, Morulas continues. The Wizard who could solve this riddle for us is not here in either case. The anti-theft devices we passed only activate in Rilithornes absence. If this creature in there is indeed Rilithorne, he is not recognized by his own wards and spells, so to say.'

'Ed' i'ear ar' elenea!'² the slender elf exclaims 'It might well have been those very safety procedures that caused this mishap in the first place. After all, the Tower is far older than Rilithorne and he himself may not understand the full range of it's enchantments.'

With a thoughtful frown, the elf looks down again to ponder the riddle, the solution tantalizingly out of reach.

Gorefoot - Gnome Barbarian 1

"So do we go in and kill the thing inside?" Gorefoot asks in a voice tinged with eagerness. He takes a couple of practice swings with his greatsword, to test whether his strength has returned.

OOC: Patlin, have the "tired" after effects of the rage worn off?

"Yes, there is indeed a magical disturbance. Unfortunately, an accident has occurred in the lab. In order to prevent the accident from endangering the city, a series of one way shields have been automatically activated extending outward from the lab. The master should return shortly, and will surely resolve the matter at that time. Until then, please make yourself comfortable in this waiting room. I am afraid that it would be dangerous to proceed further, as the master is not in residence. The creator of this tower put in place a variety of potent anti-theft devices which activate whenever the master is not in residence, and those defences could do you serious injury."

"The master was in the lab at the time of the incident. It is possible that the automated procedures shunted him to a safer locale when the incident occurred, but I do not possess that information. The master will doubtlessly return shortly. Please be seated and make yourself comfortable."

"I don't think the wizards is OK. If he were, he'd be here fixing things. He's been teleported away somewhere, probably outside the tower. That thing in there is more likely part of the problem. So dumping the spellbook in there probably wouldn't help."

Persephone

"What if the thing in there wants to get out. Perhaps we could toss a rope over the top and it could climb out."

persephone looks up to see if she can tell where the barrier ends. The smoke must be coming out somewhere.

The barrier isn't 100% airtight, and the smoke is seeping out through the top of the field. The field appears to be dome shaped.
