(Adventure) The Island of Varras'zul (Manzanita Judging) (Concluded)

ooc: From the 3.5 SRD:
"Natural Healing: With a full night’s rest (8 hours of sleep or more), you recover 1 hit point per character level. Any significant interruption during your rest prevents you from healing that night.
If you undergo complete bed rest for an entire day and night, you recover twice your character level in hit points."

This does not include the benefits from having an able healer:
"Long-Term Care: Providing long-term care means treating a wounded person for a day or more. If your Heal check is successful, the patient recovers hit points or ability score points (lost to ability damage) at twice the normal rate: 2 hit points per level for a full 8 hours of rest in a day, or 4 hit points per level for each full day of complete rest; 2 ability score points for a full 8 hours of rest in a day, or 4 ability score points for each full day of complete rest.
You can tend as many as six patients at a time. You need a few items and supplies (bandages, salves, and so on) that are easy to come by in settled lands. Giving long-term care counts as light activity for the healer. You cannot give long-term care to yourself.
"

Which of course begs the question how can you treat someone for a day or more, but they only need to rest for 8 hours :)

Mona went with Nezrak to examine the runed-platform.

After some trepidation, she placed a gloved hand the upon darkness emanating stone and invoked the divine power of her Deity. With the divination still fresh in her mind, she scanned the engraved text swiftly with her eyes.

After what seemed like a long while, she arose from her kneeling position and strode out of the sphere of shadow.

"It is as you have read, Nezrak. Something is trapped behind those double doors. The runes make little sense of whatever it is, besides the fact that it is dangerous and it is evil. Of course, as you have mentioned, there are rewards to destroying this beast. Some items of powerful magic behind those doors as well as some valuable riches.

The way the runes read, it seems that someone can probably channel positive energy into the pedestal to open the door. But I would rather not do so, given the risk and our own problems with time."

oog: It is indeed something that leaves a lot to interpretation.

For example, by a strict reading of the rules, a party only recovers HP by resting at night. Nevermind their own time schedule (whether they are surface dwelling or not). Also, Xael brought up the fact that some races only "sleep" for 4 hours and not 8 hours like most other species.

But this can be interpreted as: You can only gain the benefits of rest once a day, and then only if you rest at night. If you rest for a day and a night, then you can recover twice that.

Ug. I wish this was less vague.

For now, I'm going to rule that in my games, you only get the benefits of rest after a full night's rest without interruptions. The same with the entire day and night of rest thing. Though the recovery rate for HP is so slow that it doesn't really matter that much. But I like to run my games RAW.

"My pops always said, never borrow trouble, but Mona, what if the book that you seek is behind that door?"

ooc: Sounds like a reasonable ruling. Also, do we have anywhere besides the "evil" door to look?

Mona considered Rillian's words with startlingly grim determination.

After a few seconds of silence, she looked up to the human, a smile brightening her face.

"Then there is no choice, is there, Rillian? We have to go through"

OOG: there's the trapped door

OOC: I'm awake now, right?

Rasereit groans loudly as he wakes from he wound-induced slumber. "....blas' ye, Ah'll..." He tosses over. "Ah'll... Ah'll... Ah'll KILL YE!" He leaps up, wielding two imaginary axes and slashing at poor Rillian. The crazed dwarf suddenly comes to his senses and stops in mid slash. "Er... eh, sorry there, mate... Guess Ah... got a bit carried away with that 'un." He looks around. "Uh... what'd Ah miss?"

"Not much, Scun managed to beat the skeleton, we confirmed that there's a trap on the door over there, and that we need to bash the door down. And we're going to need you and Scun to do it. I can turn you giant-sized, so you can probably bash the door down beyond the triggering range of the trap. Though I'm not sure if it'll work, is this okay with you?", Nezrak says to Rasereit and Scun.

OOC: Assuming I got to reprepare spells, I now have two Enlarge Persons. Rasereit loses the two-weapon fighting feat when enlarged, so he's much better of using one axe two-handed. Scun and Rasereit should do enough damage on average when enlarged, to bring the door down within the two minutes the spell lasts.

"Rasereit looks pretty beat up... Scun, can you call upon Mongrel for aid? I don't feel confident putting an oversized dwarf near that firetrap. He might hurt himself. Besides, I suspect we may need his fighting capabilities for whatever is being the trapped door," Ogrin indicates the smaller of the two doors before continuing, "not to mention the huge doors out there."

"I don't know about this. Sounds like we'll just end up getting burned and wasting more time. Let's find a big rock to hurl at the door. There are various piles of rubble around here."

oog: I don't think a rock will deal enough damage. A medium sized rock will probably do 1d4 points of damage (assuming that a tiny one deals 1d2). Also, the largest rock you'll find here (1d6) is probably large but it won't fit through the doorway.

"I shall heal him" Mona said. "Scun should save his spiritual strength for when it is truly needed"

She cast a spell of healing upon Razh [healed 10, Razh is at 14]

oog2: ag. Just remembered that the disable device roll was supposed to be made in secret. Ah well..
