Ageism in gaming

I am 44. In my current gaming group I have two people in their 20s and two in their 30s and one other Over The Hiller like myself ;)

I have had people look at me about my gaming habits. They usually couch their remarks in the "time to put away childish things" mode, but I counter that I don't follow sports, I don't play golf, and I don't play poker, all of which are just as childish as rpgs, yet no one comments about them.

Personally, I am a very Out Of The Closet gamer :D

Green Knight I am in Tamarac but I play near South Beach on Sundays. Our group is full right now. I was looking for either a Shadowrun or a Scarred Lands game. maybe even a table top Vampire.

There seems to be a shortage of DMs down here because I can find plenty of people looking for a group.

Nimisgod you are right there can be issues with underage gamers you are responsible when they are in your home. One of my son's friends got drunk one night when he spent the night. The two of them had found some Kuhlua in my fridge and mixed it with Yoo Hoo. I was furious when I found out I had gone to bed. They were settled in his room watching Next Gen videos. I took the kid home and the parents were rather nasty with me. With gaming I would think you would have to be careful with the content of the game.

I still hear from my mother when are you going to stop watching that trek stuff and stop dressing up in period clothing. Your in your forties when are you going to grow up.

My answer is if growing up means giving up things that I find fun then never!

Yeah, same here. I see people looking for a game, but no one willing to run one. What I wouldn't give to find a Ravenloft DM. Oh well. :o

I have a lot of settings I would like to play and can't find anyone to run them.

Ack. That's one aspect of gaming with minors that scares me: meeting with and dealing with the parents. I've never been too confident around strangers expecially angry ones(except when GMing... strangely enough).

I haven't met with a parent whose accused me of tempting his or her child to Satan though. I'm sure that will prove an interesting experience, if not a frustrating one.

I've never been one to adhere to being too nice (okay, maybe I am), but I know for a fact that overly mature themes in the game would only serve to either alienate or scar the "young 'uns". Either way, its not really that "fun" to do either unless that's really the theme of the game (I mean alienating, not scarring. I reserve scarring for close friends).

Ahh... the things you learn when running games for younger sisters and their friends.

Know the feeling. Though in the case of Mutants & Masterminds, I'm willing run it. Unfortunately, I've had zero luck finding players for that, either. Ah well. Que sera, sera.
