Agh! 2nd Edition!

My DM wants to convert on the 2nd session from 3rd to 2nd Edition ... why, I'm not sure. He's in my 3rd Edition game but it could be for the Critical Hits table, Weapon Initaitive, or who knows what. I don't know what to do. I'm play a character I would like to see grow but to ... retard him in this manner made me freak. Their playing right now as we speak, but I will join them shortly ... just to watch, I think, or work on my own campaign.

Am I being psychotic? I love CRs, Skill Points, ECLs, Feats, and no silly dual classing/demihuman multiclassing. For a second I said, Ha HAH! I will make a broken character so I will show the inherent weaknesses of 2nd Edition! But I do not know anymore... As you can tell, 2nd Edition bothers me a lot as much as a hard core 2nd Edition player hating 3rd. Is there a compromise?

Usually, I lie to hard core 2nd Edition players and tell them it's only a game, so why not just play the game in 3rd since it's all about RPing? Of course, if I really believed that I wouldn't have problems playing 2nd. What shall I do?

I may make a new character ... to save my original one from the horrors of 2nd. Something broken. I hear demihuman multiclasses are better then human dual classes ... perhaps that?

Ciao

Find another DM. Or better yet, Dm yourself. Suggest perhaps the DM should try harder. After all just because you tried something once and failed shouldn't mean you give up on it. If that were so, a lot of us couldn't ride bikes, or perhaps play the piano. Remind him, pratice makes perfect.

I play 2e too. Just go with the flow. IMHO, playing 2e is better than not playing.

However, should you decide to go with the broken character route, I know from experience that dual weilding elven mages with 18/58 strength - often boosted by the strength spell all the way to 18/00 - can be pretty dangerous. Hehehe. Just make sure that you have a decent Con - at level 5 fighter, level 4 wizard, my character only has 26 HP.

My favorite trick is to hold my action until a meatshield charges the enemy, and the enemy hits back. Then I charge, so that the foe can't attack me this round. Next round, I hope for a better initiative than the enemy - magic weapons, haste, or usually high dex helps - and then I run away after attacking, using the meat shield to cover my retreat. I'm less than 8000 XP from the haste spell.

Do you know if your DM has any 3rd Ed. corebooks (or any other 3e material)? Perhaps your DM is simply lacking in books, or is wanting to get value out of 2nd Ed. materials already owned.

My approach would be to play, but I would certainly be getting my DM some third edition books for Christmas...whatever I could afford. It would be something I think he/she would think is really cool. A copy of the free conversion manual might work if funds are an issue.

My theory...if a DM is vested in third edition material, that DM will probably be more willing to use the new rules. Value starts with discovery. Just a thought.

Actually he's a PC in my 3rd Edition game, and a good one at that. As far as I can tell it's his first 3rd Edition one (he owns many 2nd Edition books).

He knows the value of 3rd Edition, all the PCs love it, and I the DM cherish it (AoO! Woo!). I'm figuring it's Nostalgia ...

Hm, is that the cover of Meddle or what?

Actually it's a cut up from a picture of a cenobite - you know, those things from Hellraiser? It's from the artist who made some covers to Marilyn Manson. Creepy looking, but this is sufficently scifi ish wihtout seeing the creepy sewed up lips and stuff.
