Agile Shield Fighter with TWF

Shane_Leahy

First Post
I am working on a fighter that fights with his shield as a weapon along with his main weapon. Now could he take Agile Shield Fighter, TWF, and Improved TWF to gain two attacks with his shield when making full attacks? Normally Agile Shield Fighter would not be that important but using it mean the fighter could use a Heavy Shield for the better AC and damage.

Agile Shield Fighter
PHBII
Prerequisites: Proficiency with Shields, Improved Shield Bash, Shield Specialization.

Benefit: When making a shield bas and armed strike attack as part of a full attack action, you take a -2 penalty on each attack. These penalities replace the normal ones you incur for fighting with two weapons.

Improved Two-Weapon Fighting [General]
Prerequisites
Dex 17, Two-Weapon Fighting, base attack bonus +6.

Benefit
In addition to the standard single extra attack you get with an off-hand weapon, you get a second attack with it, albeit at a -5 penalty. See the Two-Weapon Fighting special attack.

Normal
Without this feat, you can only get a single extra attack with an off-hand weapon.

From reading the feat, it should work.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, it'll work.

Nice thing about Agile Shield Fighter is that you don't need TWF, which means you don't need Ranger levels (or a Dex of 15). Bad thing is that there's no iterative progression for the off-hand attack, although it's reasonable to create an "Improved Agile Shield Fighter" feat that has the normal -5 iterative attack.

Note that one could designate the shield as the main weapon, and the "armed strike" as the off-hand weapon. That way, a high BAB fighter could get his iterative attacks with the shield.

I used oversized two weapon fighting to get the heavy shield without the fighting with two one handed weapons thing. I did two levels of ranger though. This was a dwarven defender build.

FEATS
Track, Two Weapon Fighting, Endurance, Dodge, Improved Toughness, Improved Shield Bash, Oversized Two Weapon Fighting, Iron Will, Improved Critical- War Axe, Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Greater Two Weapon Fighting.

With this build in mind what's the end game? Lets say at 10th level fighter whats the finished product? What again is the penalty for using the shield as a second weapon both to hit & damage?

If you've got the dex to go down the t.w.fighting route anyway, you may as well take oversized two weapon fighting instead of agile shield fighter if you want to use a large shield, as Sadrik has suggested. With imp. shield bash, two weapon fighting, and oversized two weapon fighting, you'll be getting an extra attack with your offhand (1d6 +1/2 str assuming you use a spiked large shield). All your attacks will be at -2. If you take these feats, you'll also be able to use something other than a shield in one hand if you want.
Agile shield fighter is arguably only for those who want to use their (large) shield to gain an extra attack, but dont have the dex for the twf route.
