...many of which do not even allow for Raise Dead afterwards. ;)

That's what resurrection is for. And as soon as you reach 14th level, I suggest it be one of your three spells. At least by that time I would recommend pooling for a scroll. And honestly, by that time, 2500 gp spread between the four of you is not that much. There are plenty of rewards in this campaign.

Yep, that's the plan. :)

And next level I would swap out one 4th-level spell for Delay Death, if that is possible, to cover the less drastic situations. ;)

A question.

I have been looking at the Planar Ally spell, and am wondering how that would work out in practice. Especially the part about "of the deity's choice" is a little irritating (especially considering the XP cost, which isn't extremely high, but still hurts and limits the spell to appropriately serious uses).

So, the question is, what kind of requests could be made (i.e. how detailed can the requests be) and would they generally be answered in a way, that the called creature is actually of a type capable of doing what is required?

For example, if one of us actually died and we needed a Raise Dead spell, could I use the spell to ask for an outsider capable of raising the dead (there are at least two in the MM that are in the HD range and can cast Raise Dead and even Resurrection, though only the first is in their default spell list), and it would be answered accordingly (assuming the spell is not abused and so on, of course)?

At 12 HD, the cost for the service would be 600 gp (Raise Dead; time in minutes, assuming the standard spell list; and half for non-dangerous) or 3,000 gp (Resurrection; time in hours, as it requires changing prepared spells, assuming the standard spell list; and half for non-dangerous). Plus the 250 XP, of course.

Not sure, whether the material components have to be provided, the spell says nothing about that. I can see arguments for both ways, though I am assuming that the materials have to be provided (or at least for spells not listed on the standard spell list).

But even considering the investment of learning a spell that is only usable rarely, that would open up quite a few possibilities and would be a good fallback, just in case. Of course, the opportunity cost at the moment would be to drop the much more readily useful (and much less costly) Summon Monster VI or Wind Walk.

When preparing for a dangerous combat, calling in some potent help might sometimes be a good idea as well (though the casting time is too high to be of any use without enough time for preparation, so no spontaneous versatility).

However, if the called creature could also be one that is not actually helpful for what is intended/required (i.e. a Large Elemental, or whatnot), wasting XP (plus the spell known/spell slot) that way wouldn't be very useful.

Well it does state that if you have occasion, you can call a specific one that you know by name. So if you wrote a specific being into your background in a clever way then maybe Air would let you do it that way? And being as we are a party of 12th lvl adventurers what do you guys think of a little interwoven background as well?

You won't need detect evil as Roshan has can cast it at will (maybe just take CLW in its place?). And you might want to heavily consider lesser restoration for 2nd lvl ( for spiritual weapon?) and dispel magic for 3rd (For daylight maybe?).

And I think you would need the extend metamagic feat to use the lesser rod of extend. It just lets you use your feat 3/day without raising the slot lvl req, as it specifically says it doesn't actually give you the feat. But maybe I'm reading it wrong ;p

I like the idea..... even though I've not written a formal history I do have some ideas for Kel-fen..... he is going to be a member of a clan called 'The Order of the Onyx Veil'.... they are a very small organization of bounty hunters, assassins, and those with great magical power. Kel-fen ranks 5th in line for top seat in the organization and oversees research and study of the Arcane and crafting of spells within the cabal... with only twenty members world wide it is a very elitist group with it's intentions and motives kept buried deep within the the tight knit group....

That's what I have floating in my head so far mind you.... use it if you'd like to intertwine backgrounds... or don't... up to you :)

Well, made up the changes (most of them) I'm just too lazy to list the weigh and price of all minor things I carry, just take for example 50 gold or 100, that should cover them. And as for weigh, the guy has 24 STR and not a lot of stuff, so I think he'll be ok until I gather some Laziness banishing tonic or something.

That would probably make sense. We still got some time to figure this out, anyways. :)

Hmm... yeah, guess that would work, though I suspect, that CLW won't be a much-used spell either (the 1st and 2nd level slots get easily eaten up by the short term buffs). Also Touch of Healing should save quite a few spell slots there. ;)

And you might want to heavily consider lesser restoration for 2nd lvl ( for spiritual weapon?) and dispel magic for 3rd (For daylight maybe?).

I had Lesser Restoration originally, but I now have Restoration and Heal to cover attribute damage, so no problem there. And our Warlock has Dispel Magic at will, so no need for it (in addition I consider Dispel Magic fairly weak, if you have limited uses only, at least at this level and onward it only grows weaker). Both Spiritual Weapon (Force damage!) and Daylight are highly superior IMHO.

And I think you would need the extend metamagic feat to use the lesser rod of extend. It just lets you use your feat 3/day without raising the slot lvl req, as it specifically says it doesn't actually give you the feat. But maybe I'm reading it wrong ;p

Yeah, you read it wrong, you do not need to have the feat in order to use the rod, it gives you the ability to use the feat (as if you had it) thrice per day. The description of the metamagic rods could be a lot better, though. ;)

I would actually very much like to have Extend Spell as a feat (it's awesome for Favored Soul), but can't really afford to get that yet (but it will be my 15th level feat most likely :)).

Thanee: You can make just about any request you like of a planar ally. However each deity tends to send a particular creature for each version of the spell. I will need to search for the rules on this, but Mayaheine is likely to send Archons or other LG-aligned outsiders for each individual spell. In other words, every time you cast lesser planar ally, you will always get a particular type of creature (perhaps a hound archon). If I can’t find Mayaheine’s list, I will choose which creatures are keyed to each spell and let you know in advance so that you know which types of creatures you are likely to get for each spell. You will always get the same type of creature unless you specifically request an individual (who may or may not answer according to my discretion).

According to the rules “a spell-like ability has no verbal, somatic, or material component, nor does it require a focus or have an XP cost.” Hence if the creature has raise dead as a spell-like ability, it would technically cost nothing for them to cast it. However if the creature actually casts spells as opposed to having spell-like abilities, the creature will require the actual material component in addition to the normal cost for the planar ally spell. A summoned creature on the other hand “refuses to cast any spells that would cost it XP, or to use any spell-like abilities that would cost XP if they were spells.” In general, whether a creature is summoned or called, it is hesitant to use any spells or abilities that do or would cost gold pieces or XP. They will typically require a service in lieu of an actual gift of gold pieces in order to prove that the person receiving the spell or ability is worthy of their deity’s cause. I hope that makes sense.

Vertexx69: I have no problem with any of you writing up interwoven backgrounds. As 12th-level characters you have likely been adventuring with each other for at least a little while. Such high-level characters rarely just pick up and join with a new party. As far as background goes, the campaign takes place in the World of Greyhawk, so having some ties to the setting would be a good idea.

Metamagic rods do NOT require a character to have the metamagic feat associated with the rod although they DO require a character crafting such a rod to have the metamagic feat at the time the rod is crafted.

Voda Vosa: Since this is a fairly long-term campaign, having weights and gp values for all items you are carrying will be invaluable to me as it will save time looking up things in the book. Other players who may happen to use them and I will simply need to reference the character sheet. We will not be starting up very soon, so please take some time to do this whenever you can. The same goes for the rest of you.

A note about dispel magic: Not that I am trying to convince you to take it, Thanee, but dispel magic is still enormously useful at high levels because of the simple fact that it can be used as an area dispel when fighting many enemies at once. With the opportunity to keep rolling a dispel check on each spell affecting a target at least once, you often have a fairly good chance to dispel one effect on all targets in the area. A target with four spells active means you get up to four chances to dispel one effect on the target so your chance to roll high is improved.
