is D&D 4th edition pretty much done for? I haven't payed attention to D&D in quite some time so I figured this would be the best way of finding the answer.

Pretty much, yeah. There's still monthly content in the online magazines, and the upcoming Sundering series of adventures will have stats for 4e (as well as 3.5 and D&DN). After that, probably nothing more for official 4e support. No word on if they'll take down the character builder.

I do love ENworld, but it's not the best place to go for 4e discussion. I also frequent RPGnet for more varied 4e discussion, and strangely enough the top topic at Paizo's 4e forum is 101 Reasons Why 4e DOESN'T Suck. It kind of turns into 4e vs. 3.x by post 300, but it's still mostly informative, positive, and civil.

Anyhow, in a more general sense, yes 4e is pretty much officially dead in the water; the lion's share of the WotC team's energy is going into 5e. But 4e fans are still playing and giving it unofficial love! 4th Party is a slow forum, but has quite a few promising projects, while I myself and writing a true 4e clone. (I've since named it Points of Light, thanks to a fellow forum-goer's suggestion.)

D&D Editions don't die as long as there are players. 4e's got nothing new coming out for it, but neither does 1e, and look at the OSR....

It's about as done for as 1E, 2E, and 3E ... which is to say completely or not at all, depending on your viewpoint. No version of D&D is dead if there are gamers with their books still playing.

Pretty much. Only YOU can prevent the death of an edition. There are still active OD&D groups playing so there isn't a reason that there can't be active 4E groups 30+ years from now.

GX.Sigma covered the caveats pretty well in post #2.

It's not quite dead yet, but it's pretty darned close.
