Ambidexterity and 15 dex?

Hello there.

Say, any idea why you need a dexterity score of 15 to be ambidexterous in D&D? There is a little clumsy boy here at the block who is really ambidexterous. Not double-handed, but ambidexterous; he can write two letters at the same time and things like that. However, he is probably as clumsy as anyone can be. He has very very poor balance and is as dexterous as a cow without legs. He does not have a dexterity score of 15 or more.

Any ideas?

Salutations,

My guess it fits with the image of the ideal agile swordsmen- they are able to fight well with either hand.. or at least be able to do something with the hand he is not currently fighting with.

1) The D&D system is meant to be an abstraction. Don't worry about it.

or

2) In game terms the kid has some kind of wacko penalty to normal dexterous actions.

or

3) The kid has the ambidexterity feat, but it only applies to certain skills.

Happy gaming!

That kid probably wouldn't be too handy with two swords then... I think the Dex requirement is there because the feat is meant to be used for two-weapon fighting, not for writing multiple letters or stuff like that.

Sounds like this kids parents used the Players Option rules to roll him up, and went with a low balance score for the min-max... :D
