An Experiment I'd like to See Comics Do

Since a trend in the media seems to be turn a minor or supporting character into a black person, this is the idea I've come up with. (Nick Fury, Wilson Fisk for example).

This is a serious idea.

What I'd like to do to create a line of comics which feature the main comic book characters, such as Spider-Man, as an ethnic minority of some sort.

What I would do is start with a limited issue series to experiment with public reaction to how these characters would be received if they were changed. And of course, if the public reaction was well received then do a longer run series.

Personally, to tell you the truth, I'd be really curious to see a black Spide-Man or a black Superman. I don't think the stories would really be all that different.

But the important difference is that it would be a separate line of comics and not a real change to the main character.

Well, the Nick Fury you mention comes from Marvel's "Ultimate" line. In there, I know they recast the Wasp as Asian, and probably a few other characters here and there. I don't think they've recast any of the really big iconics, though.

I know a couple years back they restarted the Spider-Man series, reworked to take place in India. Peter Parker (renamed to an Indian equivalent) still had the Green Goblin as his main enemy, but he was some type of Indian demon.

I don't know how far this series got, or if it's still running.

They tried some of that before. A short list would include: Icon, Static, Luke Cage, Black Panther, Black Lightning, Steel, Spawn, Dr. Mirage, Dr. Light, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Sunspot , Danielle Moonstar, Dawnstar, and Falcon have all had solo or teamwork comics.

And that doesn't even touch characters like Shaman, Vixen, Vibe, Thunderbird, Warpath, Sunfire, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), Bronze Tiger etc., and goodness knows how many indie or small label characters.

Sure, its not much compared to the number of caucasians in the superhero comics...but its not bad.

Some have been around for decades. Some were intended as major characters, but didn't connect to any meaningful numbers of readers.

You missed Quantum's point, what he'd like to are What If? or Elseworlds titles that re-imagine iconic white characters as minorities.

This was done with Stan Lee's Batman, but that wasn't any good.
