Ancestral Weapon Talent

So, do you think the Paladin or Fighter class will get a 'ancestral weapon' talent/power? Basically it allows them to start off with a 'magic' weapon that could be a family heirloom, something they found somewhere, a quest item, etc etc.

I hope ther is such a power/talent ni the book, and that such an item grows in power as the charcter levels up. Perhaps he could take another talent/power (Improved Ancestral Weapon) to further enhance the weapon.

Note I am personally against high magic or the glowy tree effect (i enjoy wfrp, conan d20 and Iron Heroes d20 for just this reason) But such a talent would be very cool IMO.

Thoughts?

Sounds like handing out a Legacy weapon at the start of the game. I would not be surprised if the core idea behind that managed to show up, but since 4th edition seems to be trying to move combat related power to class abilities rather than feats, I am not sure how well that would play with multi-classing.

Never really understood the difference.
Anyone should be able to gain the benefit -> feat.
Only members of certain classes should be able to gain the benefit -> talent.

SWSE example:
Dodge: feat
Uncanny Dodge: Scout talent

Talents are also more powerful than feats, in some case much more powerful. Some of the most powerful ones have feats as pre-requisites.

Therefore, this should be a talent, not a feat.

Feat or talent, it will be in my game. I don't hand out many magic weapons, so if someone has a character concept reliant on an ancestral weapon, the option will be there.

Deciding if it falls into the feat category or is a talent isn't a call I can make without having seen the rules.

Agreed. IMC, the swashbuckler (i.e. light elven knight) is the only character who ever really considered it. AFAIK, in 4E, a swashbuckler would end up being best built with the ranger or rogue, and I'd hate to see the option closed to them.

Some Trivia:

In d20 modern (Future, just look in the MSRD) there are feats that give you TWO talents

You can select some Force talents as long as you have Force Sensitivity. It's possible to make something a talent and not have it tied to class at all.
