Angel: The Curse

I managed to catch the series finale of Angel tonight, having missed it the first time around. It was exceptional, but although I do feel that the ending was perfect, I still want more.

One quick Google search later, I found that although the TV series is over, the story is not. IDW Publishing has apparently already started releasing a new Angel mini-series, Angel: The Curse, and it sounds like they're planning more. I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to try and pick this up.

Read more about it here.

It's already had two issues come out so far, I believe, though from what I've seen (I haven't read it, just flipped through it a bit), there hasn't been any explanation of what happened after the finale- just that Angel himself is still alive and kicking.

Again, though, haven't read it, so I could be wrong.

There's also a Spike one-shot that came out recently, taking place sometime between seasons 6 and early season 7, and dealing with Spike and that vengance demon, Halfrek, and their connection. It's not bad- not quite what I thought it would be or was hoping for from Peter David (one of my favorite comic writers) but it's a fun read.

My expectation was that Angel, Spike, and Illyria survived (and Gunn died, of course). A nearly-mindless evil demon mob isn't really a good bet to destroy vampires or slightly powered-down elder gods; they can be killed, but overwhelming them with brute force isn't effective. And that's assuming some combination of a bus from the Slayer junior league, a few humvees full of Riley and his initiative friends, Connor, and Gwen (electro-girl) didn't pull up right after the credits rolled.

They shouldn't have needed to. Angel, fresh from feeding on Hamilton, should've been able to take the whole mob out solo. If the story is ever picked back up and they gloss over that, I'll be severely disappointed.

Angel: The Curse only features Angel (although issue two also has a poster of Cordelia from that commercial she did), but after that limited series finishes up there's going to be another follow-on limited series featuring more of the cast.

Well, in the second issue, there's an implication that the battle was a little harder than this. Angel thinks to himself:

"Tirgu Hateg [the Romanian village where the story is taking place] wasn't hit as hard as some. Santa Monica, for instance. That place is hurting. No place completely escaped damage. Some got it worse than others. There wasn't much in Tirgu Hateg to attract attention. And with Corneliu Brasov in charge, it's not exactly high up in global reconstruction priorities."

Now, it's not entirely clear that the destruction he's talking about occurred in the wake of Not Fade Away, but it is suggestive. Also, it's interesting to note that Angel talks about Spike in the past tense in the third issue.
