I'm not saying a group of 20 isn't workable, but optimal? Heh ;)
I've played in Diaglo's game for five years and I could definitely see 20 players. We've had over 10 at one time and that was pushing it, but that was without a Caller. Using a Caller changes the game in considerable ways, not just strategically sensible combat. In short, it's the group interacting with itself with the assistance of a Referee versus a group of individuals all vying for one person's attention.

Please pardon my ignorance, could you explain to me what is a Caller?

I think there would be a little more common ground if people wouldn't get so critical. If I want to inject some hard 3e style work into 4e then I should be asked "Why would you want to do such a thing?" or "Yeah, this is good for dull warriors, or uninspired aristocrats, or unbeatable bartenders." I've had more positive feedback on pulling 4eism into 3e than the other way around.

I also think that just by existing, 3E fans cause 4E fans to close ranks more than they'd do otherwise (and vice versa). Intra-edition wars over playstyles, letahlity, magic level etc. have all but disappeared.

A spokesperson for the party to the DM. When you have a group that size you need more oganization to keep things running smoothly, so you have a caller to sort out what all the team are doing, in what order and convey it to the DM.

The other important role that has since been lost to common play is of course the mapmaker. Equally important, otherwise you may have trouble remembering where you've been, which bits you've killed so far, and the all-important question of how to get out. You wouldn't want to wander around lost for days.

Ah, the Mapmaker! I loved to do that while playing, I still remember I had a remarkably accurate map of the first level of the Temple of Elemental Evil with little notes about what we thought were behind doors we had not opened yet. Now I've got a tear in my eye, let me move my bi-focals. ;)
