Any other hobbies cause you to lose players?

Have you lost tabletop rpg gaming group members to any of these?

I've never lost a player to one of those things. So I can't vote in the poll. Unless you count people who just don't like the D&D RPG or people who the group kicks out or people who leave from moving etc.

Card games reduced playing time for a while. I bet they regreat paying all that money on that stuff now though. In my experience once the "new car smell" wears off roleplaying is still left standing.

Can't say that I've lost any to the list above. I occasionally lose them to much more esoteric things like family, girlfreinds, and marrariage.

One guy who we used to play with decided to 'grow up'! He went and got a life and hasn't looked back. I GM'd his last game a few years ago. He said "That was a good game to go out on - thanks" and has never played again.

And no, it wasn't my GMing that stopped him playing... :uhoh:

MMORPGs are the thing in my experience.

Have one player who is getting really into WoW - although he still makes gaming sessions at the moment. But the WoW is taking up more and more of his time. Be interested to see whether he vanishes...

Another friend of mine is getting bad! Hooked on both WoW and Evercrack - reckon he puts in about 90-100 hours a week on those two. Full time occupation. Still plays DnD most of the time, but get's a little shaky when the guild is busy.

On the flip side I know a few people who play them 'sensibly' but I think they're deadly destructive to the unwary players life.

We're experiencing a bit of lull right now due to Basketball Playoffs, but when you live in Michigan it's to be expected.

My long term group in down in Indy slowed down on D&D for a while, mostly due to magic, but also because of gaming in general. It's been most D&D (1e) for the past 1.5 years, however.

My other group, where I DM, I can't get those junkies to play anything else but AD&D (again, 1e), for love or money.

WoW is to blame

I saw it coming. First the player wanted to be a Tauren in my D&D game. Then the player kept negatively comparing my game to WoW. Then the player claimed my environmental descriptions weren't good enough (but I give very detailed descriptions, no one else complains) and the player needed something more "visual" to be able to get an idea about the world. :p
