Which publishers would people consider paying $2k to become a "Lifer"?
Possibly, assuming I'd have that kind of money to spend (which I don't):
Wizards of the Coast
White Wolf - definitely if I get all their product lines, probably even if I only got their d20 stuff (which would include Malhavoc, Arthaus and Necromancer under the Sword & Sorcery banner).
Mongoose - I don't actually have anything from them, but they seem to be producing stuff at a prodigous rate.

Wizards of the Coast*
Dream Pod 9*
Atlas Games
Mongoose Publishing**
Fantasy Flight Games
AEG
White Wolf
Steve Jackson Games

* I'd do it for just the RPG books. They wouldn't need to throw in their card games, miniature lines, and the like.
** I think most of their stuff is severely flawed, but I see a lot of gems in there that I wouldn't mind polishing up someday. And given the amount of stuff they produce, I'd still feel like I was getting my money's worth.

None, because too many companies in this business crash and burn. But assuming that I knew for a fact that this wouldn't happen, I would get the following:

WotC is a special case since I work for them and do get all my product free.
Bastion Press
Necromancer Games
Sword and Sorcery Studios
Green Ronin

That's about it. There are a lot of other good companies, but none that I would put that kind of money into up front just to have all their stuff.

...They average around $25 each...A book every two months, not so unreasonable for a small publisher...So, if you like 100% of their stuff, you recoup your $2000 in a bit over 3 years. If you like 25% of their stuff, the break even time quadruples to over 13 years. Thats a long term investment! ;-)

I don't know how many books they do per year or their prices, but if they did six books at $25 per book per year like you guessed, I think it would be around 13 years to break even, not three.

I'm only trying to be helpful...in case somebody was about to part with their 2K thinking 3 years ain't so long.

I can't afford to drop $2,000 on anything, much less on a single RPG company.

But if the amount were lower, I might consider it. If Malhavoc Press decided to offer a lifetime supply of .pdf files for $100, I'd consider it.

I think Fast Forward is gambling, not so much on this being a hot item, but on someone out there being rich and foolish. One or two people purchasing this lifetime deal might be enough to seriously help their books, if the story about their having to pulp two products is true.
